adding fiber optic pipes to rear notch sight
« on: May 04, 2010, 04:46:46 AM »
I have a nice SKS,but due to my eyes, cannot focus on regular open sights, but I can use fiber optic sights.Williams makes an SKS combination-replacement rear peepsight /fiber optic front sight-but what I want is the two green dots on the rear sight -but nobody sells this as a drop in replacement[why I don't know-its seems to be a perfect solution for the SKS,and this configuration is sold for other applications]

Question-has anybody attached fiber optic pipes to the rear sight?I'm thinking if I could get some replacement fiber optic pipes, and set them in JB WELD or epoxy,it might work.I'd probably have to use a dremel tool to set them in eithher side of the existing notch.

There are good reasons a FO sight's light pipes have two thin bands holding them to the sight body - They not only secure the light pipe, but they additionally do not obstruct ambient light from entering the SIDES of the light pipe, where the light is then transmitted to the end/bead.

If you cover the light pipe with adhesive, the light will be blocked, and the FO sight will not be bright.  BT/DT/NTS.

If you apply the adhesive only to the bottom of the light pipe, it will soon depart from your rifle. BTT.

IMO, You're better off adapting an entire  FO rear sight, made for some other rifle, to your SKS.

I understand-the FiberOptic  light pipes MUST be attached in such a way as to both secure them and allow light in from the top and side, and that was one reason I wondered if using JB weld and pressing them partially in would work-sort of a ''u''channel .I'm just surprised nobody offers a drop in fiber optic rear sight for the SKS such as is available for muzzle loaders and shot guns-it seems an ideal candidate for enhancing the existing sighting system.
