Zaleski State Forest & Feral Hogs
« on: April 25, 2010, 09:20:01 AM »
Hi All,

I am taking a friend of mine next weekend to Zaleski St. Forest for Spring Turkey.  I am not a Turkey hunter anymore, but he isn't able to drive so I am taking him.  The Ohio DNR has a map of hog sightings for the state.  The southern part of Zaleski Forest is indicated to have hogs.  Anybody have any experience hunting pigs in this area, Vinton/Athens Co.?  I am looking forward to walking around the woods with my shorty 45 70, if I see a pig that would be a real plus.

thanks

When I talked to several state wildlife officers about this maybe a year ago they downplayed the number of hogs in Zaleski area. Their opinion was heavily hunted animals that may have escaped from a old hunting preserve more than likely.  I posted inquiries on several different websites about it with no real good leads.  Let us know if you see any! and good luck.

Jal,

thanks for info.  My trip is pushed back a couple of weeks.  I'll let you know what I find and/or see.   I have hunted the northern part of Zaleski since the 1980s and have never seen any pig related activity.

Leaving Friday, first stop will be at the Zaleski St. Forest Ranger Station.  Mostly going to scout for hog sign, if find any, then will organize a hunt with friends.  Will post what I see/don't see/ or hear.

Kind of a bust.  Had to make a detour Friday on the way to Zaleski so didn't make it the forest until Saturday morning.  It rained liked crazy on Friday night and the area I wanted to investigate was flooded preventing my access into the hollows.  Went to the Ranger station to talk and the place was full of backpackers.  Went to the gun range with my friend and unloaded a bunch of psitol ammo.  His wife then called with an emergency and we had to head back to Columbus.  Did notice that the mosquito/knat pollutions appear quite healthy.   We decided to regroup, find a few more volunteers and head back in September to scout for deer/pigs etc.

i was afraid of that, my yard still goes squish squish with every step.  i do know them yotes are there, mouse squeakers seem to work the best around here.

John,

I'll have to find me a mouse squeaker for my next trip to Vinton Co.  Hurt rabbit calls work around here (NW Ohio), never tried the mouse call.  I've got a squirrel call, maybe the Lil' Wolves like tree rats?  Don't know if you hunt fox, but almost everytime I have used fox urine cover scent bow hunting Zaleski I have had a visit from one of the them.

almost every morning on the way to work, i slam on the brakes to avoid a fox.  if it wasn't in front of a hippies house, i would go "fox hunting" ;).  do you still have your rossi mzl?  i've been thinking about one, but haven't heard much about them.

BB too bad the weather wasn't cooperative. Did that ranger shed any light on the pig situation there?

Try a turkey call, I seem to see yotes coming to my turkey calls in the spring around here. I need to do some more yote hunting!

John,

I still have the Rossi MZ, probably keep it and donate to my kid when returns to Ohio in 2 years after his flight training.  The Rossi shoots greated with barnes expanders and BH 209.  FFG is so fine it will go through the flash hole in the breech plug and cause problems, like screaming hot 209 primers.  The gun is meant for pyrodex pellets but I didn't try any.  I had a second Rossi MZ that shot as good as the one I kept.  The barrels IDs on both are fairly big so they load regular sabots fairly easily.  Budsgunshop has a new one for $167, used probably 1/2 of that.   If you shoot the tipped bullets you need to put a screw in bullet starter (like the one T/C makes) on the Rossi ramrod, otherwise the tip gets stuck in the female threads on the ramrod and you end up with a semi-tipped bullet.  IF you have good eyes the plastic fiber optic sights would probably be just fine.  The gun is drilled and tapped, not sure if it comes with a scope rail.  My hunting partner has already rented a cabin at Lake Hope for MZ season 2011.  If it is real cold I will be watching movies, stop by and you can look at the Rossi MZ.

The foxes I have seen have all been within a 1/2 mile of King Hollow Road and within a couple of miles of 278.

Jal, I didn't get to talk to the ranger, their parking lot was full of backpackers and campers.  We went to the pistol range instead.

Turkey call for coyotes, sounds like my friend who sets up turkey decoys and the deer stop by and sniff them.  Spring turkey only of course.

thanks for the info, i seen them on buds. even with 25 dollar ffl fee, it's still cheaper than a used one around here, not to mention the lining being peeled out and nasty looking.  i think i'm going to pick one up and try ml this jan.
congrats on your kid going flight, must be really smart, or could it be that a young person listened to a voice of experiance?

It didn't take the kid long to figure out being on his own would be a lot better than hanging out with me. ::)  He joined the Ohio ANG while still in high school, went to boot camp 2 weeks after grad. from HS and has been a air guard crew chief since 2002.  Now it is his turn to learn to fly an F-16.  If I can only talk his Commanding Officier into letting him drive deer at Zaleski with his jet then it will be great!
