Mossberg 500, how to remove 3 shot plug?
« on: December 04, 2003, 03:33:28 PM »
Help!  My newly purchased used 500A has the "duck" plug in place.  How do I get the magazine tube end off to remove spring and plug?  There is a 1/8 in wide end that I thought screwed off.  It turns, not easily, with pliers, but does not seem to unscrew.  Thanks a lot, I need this plug out to go deer hunting.  David McCubbin

It's been a while but I seem to remember the entire magazine tune unscrews from the receiver.   Remove the barrel and unscrew the tube from the receiver with a strap wrench.  Don't twist the receiver.  The plug you are twisting is simply that, a plug for the barrel retainer to screw into..    The links below goes to a parts diagram..  good luck!!

Check out my identical post and reply to it in the Shotguns and Wing Shooting forum.  I could not believe how simple it was.  I did not have to get involved in removing the tube, but thanks for your reply.

As long as that meets the rule that the feds have about the plug not being easily removeable in the field..  If in Missouri and an agent were to check, a plug that simply slides out the barrel attaching bolt hole would be pretty easy..  If it works for you good luck and good deer hunting...
