Still lovin' my K-31...
« on: January 07, 2010, 12:38:14 AM »
Last week I took it out to the range for the 1st time in about a year. Sat down at the bench and fired a 20 shot 3" group @ 100 yds with GP-11. Nothing spectacular but that's pretty good for me, considering my eyes and using the stock rear sight (looks like a cotton ball to me now).

I went home and ordered a Mojo sight and two more cases of GP-11. Just got the sight today; what a little jewel it is. I'm sure it will help me to shoot it better.

Now that I got my stock of ammo, you guys can go ahead and order some from Samco if you want.  ;D

Yes,

those Swiss do it right.  I hear that they make a darn fine watch also.

What other country are you required by the government to keep your weapon at home and hidden from those that may want to take if from you (Government).  We Americans once had a Government like that.  Now look at us D_a_M_n Progressives.  Notice I said progressives as both sides of the aisle contain them.

I have read the normal accuracy with the swiss k31's is about 3/4" groups at 100yds benchrested using the swiss gp11 ammo which its close to a match grade ammo.

There probably more accurate than i can shoot to.

Great story on the swiss and there civil marksman.  If Hitler continued on his next country to invade would of been the swiss if he wasn't stopped and driven back by the russians i'm sure that was his plan to defeat every european country too and cross the pond into the US too.  I wonder how the battle would go if he went against the swiss.

I believe it. I've been able to get ~1" @ 100 yds with it a few times. Can't do that with any of my milsurps that have a similar rear sight, even with handloads on a good day.

I think hitler would have lost his saurbraten to the Swiss.  They already proved you cannot defeat a armed populace and the Swiss are better at it than we are.................

1991 crazy:

They are more accurate than the average surplus, but not everyone can shoot MOA like most on the internet would have you belive.  There are more examples of k31 rifles that can along with the Swedish Mausers but there are many that can not.  I have one that I traded off of this board that shoots just fine.  It's not a MOA shooter in it's present condition, but I wasn't really expecting it to be.  The best I've had it do is 1.5-2" at 100.  This is more than enough for what I want to do with it.  I got my first buck of the season with it using Privi Partisan ammo.  Enjoy the k31s!

That's true. My friend (FFL) bought two walnut-stocked ones and kept the beautiful tiger-striped one for himself. Neither he nor I could shoot his quite as well as we could shoot mine using GP-11 from the same case of ammo.

I'm almost afraid to refinish the wood on this one I have; don't want to possibly disturb the way it shoots. :)

Here is a little trick that I found that helps close up the groups on the K-31. Loosen the front forearm clamp. The one up next to the muzzle end. Place a wooden shim between the hand guard and forearm on both sides under were the clamp is. I used the big end of flat tooth picks. The shim does not have to be any longer that the clamp is wide. Put the clamp back on and just snug up the screw enough to hold everything together. Then put some thread lock on the screw. Clear fingernail polish will also work. This helps free float the muzzle end of the barrel and has helped all three of my K-31's shoot better. To really make them shoot you need to work up hand loads for each individual rifle. Some rifles need to have their crown re-cut also.

Its not funny but with most of my surplus guns and some of my modern guns with open sights I can't do better than 1 1/2" groups.

I read similar on Cruffler when the K-31's started showing up. As I recall, the recommendation was to use a piece of a business card on either side.

On mine, when it's clamped there's still a little clearance between the wood and barrel. I can see how if there's no clearance, temperature/humidity variations could cause the wood to expand/contract/warp to degrade accuracy.

If the wood is touching the the barrel at all where the barrel exits the forearm/handguard area you can have accuracy problems. I usually remove a little wood at these points and shim the forearm/handguard as stated.

Another thing I have noticed is that I get better accuracy out of true 7.5X55 cases than the fellows I used to shoot matches against that were using reformed 284 Win cases. There are a lot of variables in this assumption. It could be that my rifles just shoot better than theirs or that my hand load shoots better than theirs or that I may be able to shoot better than they do. I use the Graf/Prvi made cases and I really like them.

At the time when these were just $79 each they were shipping out beech and walnut stocks at the same price.  It was like opening a box of chocolates you never knew what stock wood you were getting.  Most of the butt stocks were blackened from standing outside stacked in the snow.  If you very carefully redid these stocks and did some selective steaming on some of the history marks most of these cleaned up really nice.  This first batch were in tough condition wood wise.  I did leave some of the history marks. They can look like this:

I have collectable rifles and shooters too my shooters get special attention to the finish on the stocks.  I like to seal the stocks better against the weather.

I'm hoping to do three swiss k31 builds soon.  One using the st marie drilled and tapped scope mounts/ muzzle brake,  one with the st marie dopler(peep sights)/barrel dampener and the last one with just the barrel dampener.

Then its time to work up a load for it and benchrest them.  I do notice that some have better triggers than the others too.  I used moly on the bold cams and there much smoother now.

I just ordered all the slings and muzzle caps for my swiss k31's too.  Some came with them and some didn't.  I even got a swiss k31 cleaning set too.
I'm also using neetsfoot oil on all my leather slings to keep the leather soft and plyable.

I'm new to GBO and just noticed this forum. I got into milsurps when I retired. The K31's are by far my favorites. I was surprised with stock color fives different times. The most was $89. I am presuming that folks here know about the info under the butt plate, but it wasn't mentioned here. Three of the five that I got had it. Good luck.

I bought 3 of them some time ago for cheap. The local gun club has a miltary rifle competition, iron sights only, and I think these guns will serve me well. I am sure of this.

Now these swiss k31's were setup for 174gr bullets so i'm thinking about a bullet around 174gr with a boattail for the same accuracy if we handload.  Also for the ladder site to be correct too.

Hey yall K-31 shooters,
Anyone need a clamp-on scope mount?..  I'm selling one in the general classified.  Going to go back to iron sights for my k-31.
thanks,
Deerandduck

Love mine, I have 2, one with the side mount.  The other I was thinking of using mount that replaces rear sight.
Anyone use the scout setup?

The only thing that I don't like about mine is the safety.  You can tell that the Swiss were planning a defensive war and not to be in a situation where they might be ambushed.  Operating the safety is very deliberate and slow.

I purchased the St. Marie screw on scopemount along with the barrel muzzle dampener but i may get the screw on muzzle brake/dampener and use the dampener on another k31 build.  I just haven't gotten around to putting it all together.  I have a long scope with the sun shade extention too.  I hope to have a rifle with the match grade accuracy using swiss GP11 ammo.  I would like to build three k31's, one scoped,  one with the doptler st marie sights and one with open sights with the barrel dampener.  I've collected a few k31's not a dozen but enough were i can spare 3 for builds.
