Saw a Cool Handi
« on: April 30, 2010, 04:18:33 PM »
I was in a pawn shop today and they had a .45-70 with a straight gripped laminated stock.  The stock had a gold NEF coin inlaid in it.  It had a 4X Simmons scope mounted in some see thru rings that were just high enough for the scope to clear the hammer.  The tag said it was an SB1 .45-70 but the barrel said SB2.  The tag said $350.00 firm.  It looked new.

The SB2 on the bbl means nothing. Was the tag a factory tag or a shop tag ? If shop owners are not familiar with H&R's they may not know the differance and the only way to tell for sure is to pull the butt stock and see if the frame is skelitonized or solid. Then again if it was taken in from a private owner he very well may of made it a point to tell the guy it was a SB1 frame to  lessen any liability on himself if someone else bought it.Kurt

It sounds like a pretty rifle, but I don't care for straight stocks in a heavy kicker......just a whimp, I guess.  I think they know it's a SB1 or else they would have just written down the "SB2" on the barrel.

H&R doesn't offer or have they ever offered a 45-70 barrel on an SB1 frame, either the tag is mismarked, or someone has put a used barrel on an SB1 frame. If it is an SB1, I sure as heck wouldn't want it, it's hard telling what kind of loads have been run thru it previously, it may no longer be safe to even put a shotgun barrel on it, cast iron isn't steel and likely won't show signs of failure until it's too late. But for $350 firm, they'll not ever sell it to anyone with any Handi knowledge.....unless the medallion actually is gold and not just gold colored. ::)

Get the serial number and call the factory. You might advise the pawn shop owner next time you see him what it actually is instead of speculating about it. If it is a shot gun frame, you might even save someone who does buy it from getting hurt.
