Non-Lethal way to quiet dogs in neighborhood?
« on: April 28, 2010, 03:38:19 PM »
Just wondering if anyone is aware of a device that emits a sound at pitches that dorgs will hear but that will shut their yaps up?
Can't kill them since they are chained and legally contained.
It's really difficult to enjoy the cool comfortable weather of spring with annoying dorgs barking.

Any ideas?

Get some nice soft white bread.  Pull off the crust.  Add a heaping spoon of peanut butter to the center and fold into a ball.  Toss 'em a few.  They will be quiet a while.... :D

I've got a friend that solved his problem neighbors dog with a simple electric water cutoff from a washing machine. He hooked to a hose to a sprinkler and everytime the dog started barking he would plug in the cord to the switch. It would make the dog run into his dog house and he would'nt bark in there. After a few nights like that the dog quit barking at night and the neighbors yard got greener.

LOL! And if you can, watch the dogs after they eat it for some comedy relief.

To make it more effective, add a crushed Benadryl tablet to the peanut butter.  :)

id be careful an ask some body that knows[perhaps the one that posted this knows] the effect of benadryl on dogs..if it doesn t affect dogs as it does people,,it could cause some real problems ,for you..
if by chance the dogs don t just go to sleep ,temporaryly..you could be opening yourself up to a lawsuit...
or worse, end up having to shoot somebody..
this just my caution ..id report the disturbance,if dogs barking was bothering me..
where you live makes a lot of difference,as to the handleing of that problem..are you recent move in yourself... are they..the dog is not concerned with rules..his master should be..but should an is,, are not always the same..
heck ,if you handle it wisely ,you could even make a friend of your neighbor..friend neighbors are a lot better to have ,,than enemy neighbors.jmo . good luck. slim

A neighbors dog about 200 yds away used to bark at night when I first moved here. Wasn't used to having someone in this house. I cured him by leaving my radio tuned to an easy listening station playing all night. Not real loudly I doubt a person could hear it that far away.

He's used to having neighbors now which is a good thing because the radio station I used to listen to changed formats and now there isn't anything on the radio that I want to hear. Except Rush of course, but he doesn't play at night, and I doubt he would calm dogs. He doesn't calm me, he just makes me more agitated but I still listen.

Excellent suggestions.

I especially like the peanut butter/dramamine option.  LOL

And there is nothing quite like the sound of beagles on a rabbit trail!  Lovely.

I'll definitely check out the sonic devices.  Another neighbor would be interested
in fixing this problem.  We may have to work out a plan on the birdhouse.

I might would go the other way...I have a coyote hunting CD...One afternoon, I put it in my caller and cranked it up, every dog in the neighborhood went to howling...

Wait until about 2:00am and crank that baby up, get them all singing...Run it for 10 minutes and cut it off, sooner or later the dog owners will get the message...:)

Alternate the coyote CD with Frankenstine by the Edgar Winter Group and the dogs owner will end up killing the dog.

No help from animal control?    No laws where you are about barking dogs after certain hours?

Yep, with the "right" to own dog(s) comes the responsibility to not intrude on the rights of others to a bit of peace and quiet. Where I live, in unincorperated area, there is an ordinance about dogs barking at night, but the Sheriff's Office usually refers it to animal control, who works day hours, so seldom does anything get done. I work nights, and of course sleep during the day, and it really irks me that so many nearby folks leave all day long, and teather there dogs out, unattended, all day long, barking like crazy. Simply rude. I don't mind the nearest one, I have come to learn his different barks...bored...stranger walking around...stray dog in yard...etc.
As far as "cures" go, I'd like to know how that sonic noice maker that advertises on TV works, and its range...anyone have any experience ?

I have a son-in-law that some years ago was special ops.  While we were staying at his apartment on base one time, the folks across the way got themselfs a miniature doberman.  This dog had an annoying "yip", and he never stopped.  He spent day, and night jumping at the fence and yipping.  Calling the MPs solved the problem about two seconds.

On the second night, about three in the morning I was awakened by a shadow moving across the hall, and the sound of the front door opening.  In a few moments, there was one louder than normal "YIP", then silence.

Always wondered what happened to that dog! ::)

Have you tried talking to the owner of the dog?If the owner refuses to cooperate call the local law enforcement and file a complaint.A visit from the officer will usually solve the problem, but if it doesn't you can seek a warrant aginst the owner.

The other neighbor (Town Mayor) has caused hard feelings by talking to them before.
The fella is the son of the richest guy in town.
There are battles to fight and this is not one.
I'm thinking that the sonic device is a simple solution.
The 50 $ would well be worth avoiding the headaches that are involved with
confronting the fella and dealing with the aftermath.

Sonic things don't work, tried two of them, and they weren't cheap, one company took theirs back, been about a year now so I don't remember who made em. I have four pugs next door that bark constantly from the time their left out in the morning till their brought in around 11pm, no laws on the books out here, sure is fun lounging on the deck with ear plugs in, their bark is so shrill, right up there wit fingernails on a chalkboard...............steg
