.410 Slug / Full Choke ?
« on: June 08, 2010, 07:28:10 AM »
Hi All,

I was wondering if I could shoot .410 slugs out of my single barreled .410 w/ a full choke. The ammo  I saw said "any" choke would work, but I wonder. Is it safe? As a disclaimer, I don't plan on hunting deer w/ it, but am curious nonetheless and figure it might be good on close up groundhog hunting.

I would say yep. Most slugs are under sized or fluted ( some think it is rifling on the slug  ???) to allow some place for the lead to go if the slug is fired thru. a to tight choke. Some slugs suffer from both conditions. You might try the buck loads for 410's also in some guns they are good.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I'd used a .410 full choke old H&R my first year deer hunting.  Full choke deforms/deflects some, but out to about 30 yards, you can usually keep it in the kill zone.  You will probably want a slip on limbsaver recoil pad though, if it kicks anything like that one did.  I could only shoot 3 and I was bruised and about finished.  I don't know if I'd have been able to force myself to shoot it at a deer that year after the pain sighting it.  8(

This is a frequently asked question and it's wise to ask a question if you have any doubts as shooting by it's very nature can be dangerous and nothing should be taken for granted.

You can rest assured the ammo companies wouldn't put the word "any" on their box if there was a chance of doing damage to your gun, or worse yet, a chance of causing physical injury to the shooter.

Foster style slugs are designed to safely work in all chokes, including full.  That said, I personally wouldn't shoot any thru one of the "super full" turkey chokes - the slug would likely be so deformed that accuracy would be non-existent.

As far as accuracy in your gun that is a very individual thing - some full chokes shoot slugs very good and some don't.  No way to tell until you try some.  And try some different brands, you'll usually find the gun will prefer one loading over the others.
