Eyes getting older
« on: December 04, 2003, 12:10:10 AM »
Turning 50 next week, just got fitted for X 2 reading glasses.
My distance vision is as good as it ever was, but am now fighting my eyes to re-focus on the front sight after looking at the targets.
How do you other ' old guys' do it??
Can prescription shooting glasses allow you back / front / target focussing without moving your head??
Please help, I don't want to have to shoot scoped events other than by choice.

ihmsakiwi,
Many shooters I know use a Merit optic.  They are advertised in the IHMSA news.  I personally do not have glasses but for many perscription eyeglass wearers this devise helps.  Other similar devises are available for the shooting glases from champion etc. but are considerabley more expensive.  Hope this helps.

I focus on the front sight and let the target blur.  I aim center mass and let it fly.  It seems to work cause I can consistently hit AAA scores.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

I think I've spent more money trying to see the front sight than on guns the last several years!  :)

For freestyle shooting including UAS, I now use Champion shooting glasses. (http://www.nealjguns.com).  I have a .25 lens that I use for UAS.  I then add a .50 lens when I shoot iron sighted guns.  With scopes, I just open the iris up all the way.

For Standing events with iron sights, I use a G.W. Gehmann iris from the same source.

My normal perscription glasses work fine for US.

Gehman and Merit

You started a thread that I need to read. LOL

I'm new to Pistol Silhouette so I'm just learning some of the tricks. I have a Merit adjustable iris that attaches with a suction cup. It seems like I have a hard time getting it into the same position as the last time, so I've been looking at the Gehman. I've seen pictures of it so I have a general idea but I've not seen one close up.

Does the Gehman have much adjustment up and down? Do you seem to be able to get it easily back to the location it was in the previous time you used it? I'm looking at the one that clips on glasses and flips up.

I hate to buy something only to find out it's not what I like or doesn't work for me? It's guaranteed for 4 more animals per match right? One of each and maybe 2 chickens.

Anything else I haven't though of? I'm shooting NRA Hunter with a 22 LR Contender. Just added a Williams Foolproof with knobs and blade.

Thanks, SteveAZ

Steve,

The chap from whom I purchased the Gehmann sold it because he didn't like the way it worked in Creedmoor.  I've tried it, and it does work for me.

But, since you are going to use it in Hunter Pistol, Creedmoor isn't important anyway.  I bought it for Standing & Field Pistol as I use Champions for Creedmoor.  I have them set for that and didn't want to change the setting.

I find the Gehmann works well for me, has sufficient adjustment up & down, and reinstalls to the same place.  (I am not aware of any promises of additional targets.)

Hope this helps!

Well i got my prescription lens shooting glasses for my birthday a couple of days ago, all seems reasonable at air-pistol distances in the back yard.
The test will be the 100 & 200 disciplines.
Front site real sharp, targets slightly blurry. Will report after test at next shoot. I think a Merit will be an additional thing n due course.
