30-30 ammo
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:59:48 PM »
I got a new 30-30, but I'm disappointed in the cost of factory ammo.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get a good price on factory ammo?

Walmart seems to have about the lowest prices on common ammo, at least in central PA, and its one of the few products they carry that is made in the USA

If you don't mind ordering then you might want to try midwayusa.com

When I called last week, WM here only had Winchester and I think it cost about 15 bucks.  I did find a place online that had Prvi Partizan for about $12 a box.  I guess I'm going to just have to suck it up.  I hope costs go back down.

Last week I paid a little less than $13.00 for a box of 170 grain Federal ammo (blue box kind) at Wal-mart. I guess it depends on what your local Wally-world carries. BTW, I also paid $15.00 a box for Federal blue box 150 grain .308 ammo. Lonnie.

Twelve fifteen dollars for a box of ammo is low compared to some other Calipiers . Here in central Ontario Canada a box of 444 /307 are about forty a box . A box of 17HR was close to 28 bucks out the door.
So 30/30 are still darn cheap

Make my own. With store bought FTX, they are 55 cents a round. With home made cast, 30 cents a round.

A Lee Classic reloader $35
Pound of powder $25
Brick of primers  $40
box of bullets      $30 (FTX, you can get cheaper)
Your old cases   Priceless.

That will make 100 rounds, another box of bullets will make another 100 rounds.
Then you will need another can of powder and more bullets.
The more you make, the cheaper it gets.

If you go cast, you can get 500 boolits for $50-80.
If you do, you will need another tool called a belling die. (to open the neck to accept the cast boolit $10)

You can  load anywhere once you have your kit built.
I use a tackle box and have three Classic Loaders 30-30, 30-06, and 45-70.
Which use the same primers and powder, 2 use the same bullet.

Well if you reload it cost about $.15 per round verus $.65 for factory?  I quess you can tell what I do! I also cast my own bullets which makes it even cheaper per round!  Nothing better then using your own rounds to harvest game! ;D

The cost seems to drop dramatically during the first week of November in the big box stores.  Watch for sale leaflets in you newspaper.  Stores sell them almost as loss leaders to get you into the stores.  I have seen the Federals go for $10.99 a box on sale, and the Remington Corelocks go for around $12.00

30-30's are common at garage sales, and the cost is usually $2 to $4 for factory ammo.  I reload that caliber and like the versatility as much as I like the savings from reloading.

During WWII my grandfather paid $20 for a box of 30-30's as ammo was scarce and reloading much less common.  That was a lot of money back then but it was a necessary expenditure.

30-30 ammo is the 13" tire size of ammo.  its the cheapest!

reminds me I had a 66 dart that took 13" tires.  loved every minute of it!

Around here shells go down fast after deer hunting.  I usually look for Federal Premium 30-30 and 7-30 Waters right after hunting season, and have gotten them for around $10.00  a box.

Stick with the Remington 170 grain Core-Lokts.  They offer a rebate in the fall.

Walmart still has the best prices around here (for what they carry).
Being as my rifle loves Win 150gr PP best, works out good for me.

Midway USA doesn't seem to be able to keep much of anything in stock
and thier prices ain't all that great.

My Glenfield 30A just loves Federal 150's and they are about 12.00 at Wally World.  Works out good if I'm to busy to load any before taking the kids out to shoot.  DP
