Barnes 95g TTSX for 6.8 !!
« on: March 09, 2010, 03:43:06 PM »
We have been clamoring for this for some time and think it's going THE bullet for 6.8
I am a huge Barnes fan and I have yet to pull the trigger releasing a Barnes projectile and lose an animal.
They go down hard and fast.

Thad the lab manager was at Bill Wilson's ranch 2 weeks ago and they were testing the new bullet
They wacked 11 pigs and were doing more testing, getting complete pass through penetration thorough both shoulders at 325 yards on a 190lb hog. get this, out of an 11" SBR!!

I got my sample of 200 bullets in the other day, initial load looks very good
sub MOA out of my Wilson Combat 6.8

A comparative pic I took

I purchased a Robinson Arms XCR-L in 223 about a month ago to hunt predators with, since then I have been checking into the 6.8spc conversion kit for this rifle so I can hunt deer/black bear.

I'm thinking that if I get this conversion/cartridge combo I would load 2 bullets the 95gr TTSX for when I am serious about hunting and the Sierra 110gr Prohunter due to it being appr 1/2 the cost of the 95gr TTSX and would make a nice all round bullet for everything else.

I asked Barnes what was the lowest velocity the new 95gr TTSX bullet would still expand the response was depending on the medium as low as 1600fps.

yeah, down to 1600 for reliable expansion

I got to take my first pig this weekend with the 95 TTSX
worked as expected :)

I just received this info this morning from Barnes referring to these 6.8 95gr TTSX...

Quote
We test the bullets in Water for expansion down to 1700fps. In many cases we
have seen where tissue and bone will allow them to expand below our test
velocities.

I'm guessing the BC will be somewhere around .300 so with a 2900fps muzzle velocity (my barrel when I get it will be 18.6") the velocity will still be appr 2050fps @ 200 yards and with a 200 yard zero will be 1 1/2" high at 100 yards and 8 1/2" low @ 300 yards where the bullet is still doing appr 2050fps.

If we go by the Barnes tested velocity of 1700fps (just for an example) your max distance will be appr 450 yards with a retained energy of 600 ft lbs and a bullet drop of 37.5" and for info sake @ 500 yards = 1580fps = 530 ft lbs of retained energy.

Considering 300 - 350 yards is my self imposed hunting distance with my Robinson Arms XCR-L I am thinking that this bullet will definitely get the job done.

yep...
that's about what I would say is an ethical clean kill max distance

I don't put too much into energy figures, but I feel confident that if I put the bullet where it is supposed to go, it would cleanly take anything in Texas out to 350 and 400 if I really wanted to stretch it

I will pass on shots that aren't right of course..

I have to many other rifle/cartridge combo's from 6mm-284 to 375RUM to use if I am hunting areas where I might push the distances beyond 350 yards so I'll probably never pack this rifle/cartridge combo in areas that the shooting distances are longer.

These 95gr TTSX and doing the ballistic chart that I referred to above has finally convinced me to get a 6.8spc.

I just ordered the 6.8 conversion kit for my XCR-L should have it sometime next week, I'm stuck with only being able to get Rem brass at this time though.

Same here, if I know I am going to have a high likelyhood of shots past 300, I will just take another rifle

I can say that everything I have shot with the 6.8 was just as dead, just as fast as if I hit it with a 308, 270, etc....

Silver State Armory brass
CCI 41 primers
2.285 COAL
29.5g of RL10X

that is a safe load in a SPCII chambered, 1 in 11 twist, 4 groove barrel rifle
of course, back off and work up

ccoker you have to give a little more info on your latest pig distance load etc pic's...    ;D

My 18.6" barreled 6.8spc 11 1-11" twist conversion kit for my Robinson Arms XCR-L has arrived and I was able to get to the range with my 110gr Prohunter + H322 powder + Rem brass + Win LR primers once I got everything sighted in and worked up to my 29gr loads I was getting 2649fps average and 1 1/2" 100 yard groups things opened up to 3" @ 200 yards but considering that I put this load together as my plinking/fun load I am pretty happy with it.

My 95gr TTSX have arrived at my component supplier here in BC, Canada he is just waiting for my brass to arrive and he will ship my order hopefully will have everything by next week.

I'm trying to get out for a few days black bear hunting this week if I can pull it off I will be the first person in Canada to shoot a black bear with an RA XCR-L in 6.8spc or any 6.8spc of any kind...    :D

clean exit wound, pig down, game over, pretty straightforward :)
