!2 ga BP Huntsman Muzzle Loader

   Was helping my son today on a job not far from where I live. In the course of the day got in a conversation with the homeowner
about hunting and guns and he mentioned he had a couple he was thinking of selling. He had a H&R Huntsman in a 12 ga muzzle loader
which is the first one I have seen, that was in excellent condition. I guess they haven't made these in a while and I have no idea of
what they are worth. Is there an interest in these yet and what do you think it would be worth?
   It had a 28" bbl and straight gripped stock and believe the serial # was AL. I may go back as is probably a collector Item. What do you

I got one in as new perfect condition I paid $115 for it's an AL. They are not the Goldmines some think they are when they find them. Shoots pretty good also though I have not done much load work with it. Kurt

  I thought as much, for as little as I would use it, the only things I use a 12 for anymore is turkey and have gone to 20 ga for deer and
small game in my home state. He wanted 150 which I thought was a bit much.

Fred, regarding this 12 gauge Huntsman with the serial number beginning with AL, do you remember if it had a regular SB1 frame with standard firing pin or if it had the big (appx 1/4") flat firing pin for ML primer caps?...Thanks....<><....:)

Both 12gaML that I have come across Andy were the fat pin. I could be wrong but I think all the Huntsmans in the 70's early 80's were fat pin because of the precussion caps. I don't think they came with the small pin til they came with the orange thingy and the combo's. But then you never can say never with these H&R's Kurt

Thanks Kurt, I have found one for sale but have not seen it yet, it is an AL prefix (1973). I am considering getting it if it's in good condition and possibly have it fitted for screw in choke tubes. If it has a screw in breechplug I am wondering if I could get one of the unmentionable manufacturers converters to 209 primers made for it. I would of course then fit it to another regular firing pin style reciever and use the fat firing pin reciever as a paper weight. Now that I think about it it may not be worth the effort....<><....:)

I just picked one up myself this month. Mine is a AL### and it has the fat pin and a press in plug. If there is anything else I can check let me know.

Thanks Rob, you are just what I needed, a guy with hands on knowledge of an AL series 12 gauge ML. The one I know of is supposed to be in 90% condition and they are asking $135 but I thought I may be able to do a little better. Do you like the feel and workmanship of the gun you bought? Does $135 for a 90% gun seem about right or is it high? I would like to get a BP ML shotgun just for the fun of it, and maybe turkeys even...anything you can enlighten me on now that you have one the same year of manufacture as the one I am considering?...Thanks....<><....:)

I like the way it feels. Fit and finish seem to be good. Mine looks like it has not been shot, or if it was...not much and then well cared for. I haven't shot it myself yet, I actually just started getting into these "smokepoles". I also have aquired a .45 huntsman with an AL### prefix recently from a pawn shop for a really good price as the condition it was in was questionable, but she cleaned up well. I paid a little bit more for the 12 ga. than what they are asking for yours but figured they aren't making them anymore.....

That sweet little .45 I got from you Andy has a fat pin screw in plug that I made a spacer for and have converted to a 209 plug and am shooting BlackHorn load out of it my other 3 "A" series are push in plugs so I just use the caps with them. Try and workem down on the price but that's in the ballpark and not terribly high. See what ya can get them to throw in with it ;) I haven't worked with the 12ga much but with screw in chocks you should have fun workin up loads.Kurt

Be curious about how their Sidekick looks. I just phoned in my $18 deposit on a Tracker 1, so I gotta work my way over there at some point before long.
