Options for break open rifles?
« on: June 04, 2010, 04:28:20 AM »
I'm looking for info on what break-open rifles are avaiable, please?

The different old and new H&R/NEF models, older models specifically as the other forum covers new ones well?

I know of the Savage 219, details?

The Rossi H&R lookalikes, details?

Who else made these styles in reasonably available numbers, details?

I'm looking for a mechaniclly sound gun for a project.

The older H&R rifles (rifle/shotguns) models 58,058,157,158, and 258 (and probably others) were made in 22 Hornet, 22 Jet, 30-30, 357 mag, 357 Maximum, and 44 mag.  Other models were made in 45-70.  The earliest models came w/o a transfer bar and in both slim and full receiver/barrel sizes.  The later models, late '70 to '86, had transfer bar "safeties".  Some of the models came with a accessory shotgun barrel, usually 20 ga.  I have several of these different models and all are greal utility guns, accurate and reliable.  The Savage 219/220 series came in 22 Hornet, 25-20, 32-20, and 30-30(also with accessory shotgun barrels availiable in 410, 20ga, 16ga, 12ga and maybe others).  The Savage is hammerless in design and was somewhat heavier and longer than the H&R's.  The later ones had provision for scope mounting.  I've had several of the Savages, but prefer the older H&R's (handier).  I've had no experience with  the Rossi.  Hope this helps.

Well Mossberg made the SSI one brake open with auto eject, came in 233 up to 30-06 they still show up at gun broker or gun shows. I have a 223 and 06 and you could get a 12 guage shotgun barrel. It is an under leaver much like Ruger number one in looks. There is the TCR 83 and 87 from Thompson center they are a side leaver brake open with cal from 22 hornet up to 45-70 but were not made after 93 very nice well made. I have a 223 barrel and a 7mm Rem. mag barrel for mine, Then there is the Encore from Thompson center with a large range of barrels. There is also the Remington SPR 18 which came in a number of cal. You can find them on closeouts from 195 up to 235.

Besides the Russian-made Baikal/Remington SPR, there's the:

T/C -  Contender, Encore, TCR, & TCR-87

Rossi Wizard

Knight KP-1

BRNO Effect

Taylor Spirit Overtop

Mossberg SS-1

H&R/Handi

Blaser K95

Merkel K1 & K2

CVA Optima & Apex

Traditions Outfitter

Savage 24 ( O/U combo w/ rifle & shotgun bbl), 219/220

Most aren't very good project prospects - although a few are outstanding, depending upon the unstated "project".

I've got a lot of Handis, and I swear by them.  Reliable, accurate and easy to modify.  A lot of them can go to AI easily.  I have others that went from .357 Mag to Maximum, .44 mag to .445 Super Mag and another soon to go from .45LC to .454.  For my money, the best single around is the Handi.

Yo..nomosendero.  I'M not an afficionado of AIs.  Go to the H&R Centerfire Forum and do a search.  There are a lot of them there.

It would probably be easier to make recommendations if we knew what the "project" was. Odds are somebody over on the Handi forum has done it before, there are some hardcore tinkerers over there.....

YO

I have seen those threads & there is some information & alot of dis-information as well, thankfully the dis-information has been addressed. Without getting into a big "Ackley" discussion, you can do an "improved-improved", but for any rimless round such as a 30-06, 270, 25-06 etc., you must set the chamber back as opposed to merely putting a reamer to it. This is only practical with a bolt gun or a barrel that is threaded such as a Ruger # 1 & some others. It is not practical at all with a Handi.
Some would argue for a rimmmed like a 30-30 since it headspaces on the rim & I know the arguement, I have a Contender 30-30AI done this way but again to set-back is better even then.

Your post made no mention that it is not acceptable to "AI" the rimless rounds & since the overwhelming majority of chamberings are for the rimless rounds, I have to point that out.
This blanket statement could give alot of problems.

You will note Pete said to go over to the Handi Forum and look.  All the rounds he listed that he's rechambered are rimmed. And the AI rechambers over on the handi forum are as well.....

I noted it was in the reply.

And you will also note that when I asked which cartridges, absolutely none were mentioned, it was only stated to go over to that forum & since I know some won't do that & the question was not answered, I knew it was time for a little clarification. It is not about what any one person has re-chambered.

It is good that he said to go over & look. But rimless conversions have be advocated as well on that forum & yes there have been proper rebuttals, & the same AI questions come up every 60 days or so, but it is best to say NEVER to convert a rimless to an AI in the handi & again due to getting a better chamber it is best to set the barrels back. The Handi is good for the investment, a good bang for the buck & sometimes do quite well, again just a little clarification.
