Walkin' in a winter wonderland
« on: December 24, 2012, 09:45:36 AM »
Here in Wisconsin we got dumped on last week with 16" of heavy wet snow. After snow work and a day of rest, I decided on Sat. to go snowshoeing. I convince my wife that it would be great, the sun was shining and no wind, though it was 16deg.F. So dressed and relearning the nuances of mounting the 'shoes we struck off, swapping trail busting and doing pretty well. About a quarter mile out our little dog Rahle, a Shiba Inu held up a foot, then two, with snowballs and cold, so Joyce took pity and said she would carry Rahle back. I continued on around the field, missing the trail busting tradeoff but my Oh my was it glorious. I paced myself and ventilated well to avoid oversweating inside the coat and got down and into the woods and trail that runs around a Tamarac swamp, then up into a pine planting. Little sign of critters, its been too deep and they are laying low, and not much for bird sound, just the quiet of winter and the crunch of my 'shoes in the snow. I circled back and double walked the path to establish it better, and to keep from more trail breaking. Round trip is about 3/4 to 1 mi., a good workout. Once home, and in, strip off the damp clothes and into some warm & dry snuggies and grab a cuppa.......
Pushin' 60 and after four heart attacks Im still doing stuff. Im a turtle, but slow & steady. I should have gone under years ago, so these 'extra' years have been by Grace, but so is every week, day, hour or minute. Do what you can as long as you can, life is good!

I can relate. (I am down from 330 to 290 lbs.) I am a fat boy and I like to ride my bike when it is real cold, anything but sleet. I live in Mississippi. I dress in layers so that I can open or close as cooling and warming dictate. Sounds like a real ball. ear

Like they say, when ya get lemons, make lemonade! Once the track is established it isnt bad going, but your feet are heavier. I dress fairly light as too many layers doesnt vent well and are miserable to pull off wet once back.
Hey Ear, I ride bicycle too in warmer weather; have my old '72 BSA with sensible mods, some cruisers and a Trek 7200 set up 'British' for biketrails (we have a great set of trails here in WI on old railways). You dont happen to be on the www.ratrodbikes.com forum, do ya? Great that you have kept at it and lost the weight!

I have an old Trek Y3 rigged out for pleasure riding. No front fork brace and it will dump you on a slight downgrade. Springs are scewed down all the way but the front wheel will still kick to the side under pressure. I just ride hard roads but sometimes they fool me..
-
I got it for my back. Springs on both ends help a lot. Haven't ridden in 3 years because of my back. Injections have me back to where I am getting ready to try it again. Have to get new tires first.
I will look at your site, probably a lot there I need to know.
Thanks, ear

I bet you can get different springs and a proper brace to keep it top-side up, which, from my falling down experience is a better way to go  :P (that Y3 is a purposeful looker).
We got about 3.5-4" fresh snow yesterday and overnight so we were out again this morning about 10am. Looks like a couple of 'yotes are using our trail and we had some birdsound (its been mighty quiet). I think I'll take my pocket 'cat-stove' and keep the alcohol fuel close to my bod (warm) so I can get back in the pines and make a cup o' tea......English Breakfast, or Earl Grey, of course, maybe carry my old BSA Martini 22 'just because I still can'.

U R right, rubber down is best. A shoulder stuck in your ear takes us old folks a while to get over. You make pine needle tea or the real stuff? I suppose gcrank1 has something to do with a bicycle. Happy trekking to you. ear

Pine needle tea ifn I hadda, but my favorite is Lapsang Souchong, a dark tea with a strong smokey taste! Everything else becomes an also-ran.
Gcrank1 is a throw back to an earlier era; long ago and far away guys like so many of us were called 'gun cranks', I was glad to see it wasnt taken  ;D .
