That isn't really the modern view.  Anyone with the sense that God promised a rock knows that the issue of slavery was in the mix.  What is being said is that for some states, especially those of the Upper South, it was not the PRIMARY issue.  Revenue, tariffs, and states rights were the primary issues (and you can toss slavery into the states rights part if you like - the right of the States to determine if or how to free blacks).

I have NEVER seen anyone, except maybe liberal revisionists, say that Southerners make the claim that

.  Although some will state, and will be supported by documents such as Born In Slavery: The Slave Narratives, that most slaves were in general reasonably well cared for and reasonably happy.  Many of the small slave holders, say with maybe a handful of slaves, treated them pretty much like family - all eating the same food at the same table, sleeping in the same house, and in many cases doing the same chores.

So, it would seem that not every white in the South had dozens of slaves that were beaten every day and fed only 2 oz. of parched corn a day and dressed in rags as many Northern apologists preach.

Why does that seem like an answer to my question?  Indeed, if anything, it supports my post above regarding both sides moving themselves towards simple absolutes and away from reality.

I have to again agree with Dee neither he or I glossed over the slave issue, if anything we charged it head on. It appears to me that you either don't understand or don't agree with our answers, which is your right, in either case! (Note*****Property rights = slaves. You see slaves in those days were considered property not people. Even the U.S. Constitution stated that as fact)

We both showed, with a great degree of accuracy, everyone feelings about slavery during that time frame. As Dee recomended if you disbelieve, look it up, the answers are at your fingertip.
So in your post it would be appropriate to replace the words "property rights" with "slavery"?

I've carefully read each of your responses and I didn't see anything regarding the text of the various secession statements.  That is, specifically, what I was looking for.  What you and Dee posted I could just as easily have wrote.  I understand that position clearly.  I was looking for some historical and contextual arguments regarding the specific documents.  Perhaps neither of you have knowledge on that specific topic.  If so, sorry for the confusion.

Now who's baiting?  I let it die because I was telling the truth.  I really don't care all that much about this topic.  I derive none of my self image from a discussion about a war fought 150 years ago.  I'm not criticizing those who do, just saying that I don't.  It was just an idle topic on a subject I'd recently read about in passing.  Neither you nor Dee said anything I hadn't already heard, read, or thought about and both of you thought this was somehow a hostile discussion.  I saw no reason to continue it.  I decided the gentlemanly thing to do was let it die rather than try to always get the last word.  I was never trying to bait or start a fight and if you read that into my posts I'm sorry.  I suspect you assume that new comers to this section are here to stir the pot.  I wasn't.

I didn't come here for a fight, I came for a thoughtful discussion.  I decided it wouldn't happen or wasn't worth the work and moved on.

I'm not sure I'd ever posted in this section before, but I have read enough threads over the years to know the type that post here.  I probably should have known better and just stayed away.

Subdjoe, would you please post the exact sentences where I was "brow beat[ing]" or attempting to "brow beat" anyone?  While rereading my post see if you can find a thesis sentence (there is one) and post it here.  Then tell me what is so horrible about it.

During all of this I became curious as to WHEN Texas jumped into the mix. I found quite surprisingly that it was in February 1861, and stationed in Texas was none other than Robert E. Lee. The vote by Texans, was over whelming, and Sam Houston whom protested strongly, was forced out of the Governors office.
