SP101
« on: May 05, 2010, 04:23:04 PM »
Anyone recently buy or price a SP101 in .357 Mag. I got a price at a local gun shop where I would like to buy it, but was wondering if the price he gave me was a fair price. It would be $537 + tax. I'm undecided if I want the 2 or 3 inch barrel. It would be used for concealed carry. Has anyone shot both, or carried both, and has a preference on barrel length?

Is it blued or stainless? I have the 3 inch, haven't shot the 2 inch version. It's not a gun you'd want to carry in your pocket, but with a decent holster (Simply Rugged brand is what I have) it carries well. The weight of the gun absorbs a lot of the recoil associated with snubbies, so it's an easy gun to shoot with light and medium loads. I don't care to shoot the full power loads in my SP101, they really get your attention.

The price I got is for stainless, and I do plan on getting a holster for it.

A new one in 2.1/4" or so barrel is $475 at the local shop, SS. He said the 3" is the same price, but hard to get right now. I was looking for a 3" but ended up going with a S&W model 60 instead, also a 3".

Here in Va. they run in the $469.00 to $489.00 range , the 327 FM sometimes is a tad higher and others a tad lower . Must be the sales experince the store has had with it. The 22's used bring high prices but the 357
's are very reasonable used aroung $390.00 +or- a few bucks . I use a holster from Bianica ( i butchered the spelling ) that was made for a 3" mod. 36 S&W the fit could not be better . I also have  a El Paso cross draw which works well. I had the 2 1/2 inch gun but sold it and got/like the 3 inch gun better . I did also sell off a S&W mod 60 it just didn't feel as solid built as the SP-101 but that's just my opinion nothing more.

After seeing what you guys had to say about price. I think $537 is kind of high. So I just called another gun shop that is not much further away and asked for a price. The guy told me right around $429 depending on who they get it from. How can two dealers that have business's about 20 miles apart be more than $100 apart on a $400 to $500 gun? The guy that quoted me $429 is probably not making much on the sale, and the other guy, I wonder how he sells any guns asking for at least a $100 profit on one gun.
I kind of like the guy that quoted me the higher price. I've bought fishing supplies and other items from him in the past. We always talk about hunting, fishing and political issues, and he seams like a really likable guy. I would really like to give him my business, but $100 or more on an SP101 I don't think I'll be getting it from him.

Thanks for the info guys.

I don't know about your neck of the woods but here we never ever pay posted price PERIOD. Many shops will meet other shops price and they call each other . Just tell the guy what you can get it for and see if he works with you .

I think the sp101 is ONLY stainless. Never heard/saw of blued one. If you like the guy with the high price, tell him what the competing price is and ask him if he'll work with you on it. Or ask him what the best he can do for you. Can't hurt to ask.

I like my 2.25 bbl but really liked a 3 incher I shot. If I had money laying around I might have both.
I really like my Crimson Trace laser grips too. I too mainly carry with a Bianchi holster nylon - very good fit but the belt loop is a total pain.

I mostly shoot mid level loads but do shoot some full power 158's and even 180's now and then.

Just bought a new 2 1/4" DAO for $449.00   The triggers are much better on the new ones. Have a 3" in .357, prefer this length for all around use, the 2 1/4" spurless hammer is nice for cc.

Looked for a new SP101 357mag 3 inch.  Couldn't find one locally or online dealers.  So, I purchased (won) one on a gun auction site.  $369.00 + FFL.  Very good condition.  Very satisfied.  The 3" is heavier at 27+ onces but I feel it handles the heavier loads better than a shorter barrel or lighter J frame gun.
