CMP - 1911 45 ACP - Pistol Class
« on: May 12, 2010, 05:22:01 PM »
Hi All,

I load 45 ACP for a friend and his son who compete in Bullseye competition.  Well they just informed me that they bought "Hardball" 45s.  Little research and figured out they meant 1911 45s to complete in the CMP - Service Pistol.  Read the rules and only information on the ammo is FMJ, RN 230 grain.  Did a couple of searches and found no published data on powder, velocity etc.  I am guessing that like Bullseye you want a lower velocity, lower recoil round.  Anybody out there load the 1911 45 for CMP and care to share a recipe or two?

thanks

BB

BB:  military 'hardball' is loaded to about 850-875'/sec with the 230 gn round nose jacketed bullet; there is no other 'hardball' loading, at least that I am aware of and recall.

My older Lyman manual lists a charge of 6.5 gns of Unique under the 230 gn jacketed slug for 877'/sec., as a factory duplication load when fired from a standard Colt Government Model.  There is a Bullseye powder accuracy load using 3.5 gns of Bullseye with the same bullet, at about 625'/sec.  HTH.

OK, here's the lowdown, according to the Dept. of the Army's tech manual, TM 43-0001-27, issue date, June 1981. .45 ball, velocity is 888fps. + or - 25fps at 5ft from the muzzle. Load is 5gr. of 7970,(try and find that one), with a 230gr projectile. chamber pressure is 19,000psi. No info on primer, just says percussion.
After 20+ years at Camp Perry, never heard of anyone getting checked, mainly because you don't really get any advantage of hot rodding that caliber. Keep it in the 850 to 900 fps and you'll do just fine. gypsyman
