repel squirells.

Im looking for suggestions short of a pellet rifle on repeling squirells out of my garden. The current population is a lot less than it was but they are still a pain. I hate to put all of this work into my garden to be robbed by these critters.

The squirrels in my neighborhood avoid my backyard since I got my dog (wheaten terrier) five years ago,every now an then one must be new to the area and wonders in the chase is on,sometimes the squirrel gets away sometimes it doesn't .
I believe the rabbits got the word also since they been scarce for the last five years also.
The nice thing he doesn't dig or bark unless he has treed something or a stranger is wondering around the house.

Just buy a box of moth ball and distribute through the garden.

My 2 mini dachshunds take care of my squirrels for me. They sit by the windows & sliding glass door all day just waiting for a squirrel to try to sneak into the yard. When one does dare to come close they patiently wait for me to wound it with a .22 sub-sonic so they can give chase. These 2 mini's will chase it down and then the fun begins. One on one end and one on the other pulling, shaking, like two mini pit bulls.
It sounds a little cruel but it is very entertaining.
Funny that these two little lovable, cuddly dogs can be so obsessed over squirrels.

If you live in an area where the best solution  (22 LR) can't be used or you have an objection to shooting them then the best option may be to get a dog.  The tree rats seem to bring out the 'predator' in almost any breed.  Another option might to bribe them with a combination of shelled corn and sunflower seeds.  A steady supply of these in an area away from the garden will usually distract them.

My Dad ( God rest his soul ) years ago used to live trap them in a Have-A-Heart trap. Then give them a one way ride to the mountain forest many miles away. It seemed the more squirrels he removed the more squirrels that came too his yard.
We still think that the word got out to the squirrel population that if you came to Dads yard that you could get a nice ride in his car to the mountain. We still laugh about Dad's many trips to the mountain to release the squirrels.

I used to shoot them. Now the dog runs them off. Short of killing, an owl  decoy may or may not work. If it would work at all I imagine a little something to blow in the wind on it like a few feathers on a string or twine or something would help. At one time I tried a bb gun that could be low power. Didn't faze them. They would run off like lightning when popped but come right back later. I guess they have to be killed, or figure they are going to be killed to stay away.

My son has a 4-H Forestry Project where he is growing nut trees from seed...squirrels have been our bane for 2 years now. Honestly, my best solution has been a cage trap baited with peanuts...works like  a charm. In one week we caught and transported 6 squirrels...2 were caught in one day.

I take them about 20 miles away to my Dad's house to release them. He seems to like them and I don't want to kill them, save them for hunting season.

Don't transport squirrels in the fall, they won't survive...move them during the spring and summer months so that they have a chance to establish themslves.
