Target Return System (Move to Correct Forum if Necessary)
« on: May 09, 2010, 06:21:48 PM »
I didn't know which forum this would fall under, so move if necessary...

Anyway, my wife and I are looking at purchasing some land to build a house on.  We recently found a fully wooded 10 acre lot for a good price.  It is quiet and secluded with no neighbors.  The gears in my head started turning immediately.  I've been wanting a place where I could set-up a shooting range, and this would be perfect.  If I cut a shooting lane, I could put in a 300 yard that is some-what free of strong winds.  I would also build a small shooting "shed" that I and a buddy could shoot out of if the weather turned foul.  That is where my post comes from.  I always see the indoor ranges with target return systems and I think that would be awesome for my future range.  I would probably only go 100 yards or so with it.  This would be for sighting in or doing load development.

Does anybody out there know of or have any plans for this?  Has anybody done this?  I think it would be fun project and it would definitely be something you don't see everyday.

Thought about it and the simplest system I could come up with is simply to clear a lane out to 100yds,lay some steel angle iron as a guide track and then simply have a electric wheeled target stand that you can remotely control. Use a old kids electric car as the stand base, and pick up an old radio control car for parts to rewire the kids car. All it will have to do is go forward or reverse and on/off as the angle iron guide track will control steering. Any hobby shop that deals with radio controlled models could tell you how to rewire it or sell you the parts or for a few bucks do the whole rewiring job. May even want to replace the toy's battery with an old car battery for longer life in case you want to "armor" the target stand from stray shots and it gets heavier/uses more lectric. You can have a charger in the shed and leave it charging when you arent there. It would also be very "invisible". The idea of having an electric  or manual setup with overhead cables and lots of metal hardware like at indoor ranges would just look to ugly and costly out in the open and would seem to be a real invite to lighting strikes, rust etc. Interesting question. Would love to know what you come up with. good luck.
