Need some help.   I just got my second handi, a new 7-08 from  a small seller on gunbroker.  The issue I hope is not serious.  There is an offset between the frame and the barrel.  The side ways offset is almost as great as the thickness of the thin metal on the side of the  frame.  If this is a big deal is there some thing that can be done to correct this.   The gun is also really dirty, looks like a heavy mixture of semi-dried oil and a whole lot of carboard dust.  I want to take off all the wood for a good cleaning but not sure how.  I have a good set of punches and soft blow hammers if needed.   Any feed back on hand loads that have worked well in a handi would be great.

All the take apart info is in the FAQ's, but all you need is a screw driver and a socket wrench with an extension, take off the recoil pad to access the stock bolt.  The offset may be caused by a little weld material on the underlug that pushes the barrel to one side when it is closed, take a look for that or anything else that may be holding it over.  Larry

Taking it apart is totally simple and self-expanatory.  I wouild think, for what you have to check, the stock can stay on and all you need is a Phillips screwdreiver to take the forend off and remove the barrel.  If you want to remove the stock, a 9/16 socket and a long extension are necessary.  I think my extension is 18 inches, and works well.

If the serial number's last three digits match those engraved on the lug, I'd pack it up and send it home to be fixed.  It's a shame you didn't spot it before you bought it.  I wouldn't even clean it, I'd return it as is and gripe about how filthy it is.

The no. on the barrel matches.  The question about the stock removel sounded a little pathedic.  The reason I asked is when I tried to remove the forend and  after taking out the screw I thouhgt it would pop out with out much force.  A few wraps with a small platic hammer did no good.  The gun came with sling studs so I attached one end of a sling to the forend stud and gave it a couple of good yanks, nothing moved.  I really wanted to try to resolve these issues myself.
This was going to be my project gun for new barrels and to start with a 44mag-445super rechamber.  Thought maybe the offset issue was a little more common.  Thanks for the info and hope to there is some one who has gone down the same road.

you did the right thing... you stopped !!!!
the next right thing to do is send it in for warranty repair before something else happens to it.
they are purdy quick to repair, its just in the barrel program there kinda slow.....
as said before..... don't ask me how i know this !!! ;D

Did not know what I was dealing with at first.  Turns out to be nothing more than a terrible fitting job on the forend. Had a heck of a time getting it to come apart. The hole was drilled off center and looks like at an angle.  Fit was so tight that on the front right side the finish had some how bonded with the metal and the barrel had caused an impression on the wood.  I said this one was going to be my first project gun.  Looks like the first job is to get the fore end to fit.  I'm sure it's time to start digging into the FAQS.

Are you sure the plastic spacer on the back of the forearm doesn't just need to be moved over a little?  This is pretty common.

Is the barrel ofset still there with the forend removed? If so send it back for repair

That is what I thought was this terrible offset.  I did not know it was just a plastic spacer.  It lined up with the contour of the forend to a tee. It did not come close to lining up with the frame. The fit of the forend is what made me think there was some thing really wrong with this gun.  Like I said this is the first time dealing with a handi.  When it takes two sets of hands to pull off the stock you know it has a bad fit.    I may shoot it as is just to see how it does and if it shoots bad the first thing I will work on is the forend
