What is the best FONDING gun?
« on: May 17, 2010, 12:50:27 PM »
Bikerbeans has a thread “Confession” where he talks about “fonding” a Marlin lever gun.  The thought gave rise to “What is the best FONDING gun?”

This may turn out to be on of the weirdest threads yet.

Whenever I am doing nothing but watching TV in the evenings, I always have a gun-rag wiping down the gun of the evening.

Some good ones are of course the Marlin 1894C 357 Magnum.  For the Handi’s the 45 Colt Carbine is good, as well as the BC, but the best Handi for me is the 38-55 BC Target.  Its 28” barrel seems just about to be the perfect “fonding” gun, great to shoot too.

Another one that is a little better than the Marlin 1894C is the 357 Magnum Henry lever gun.  It is a little heavier and it has that great brass hardware.

Ruger #1s and #3s are good too.  Of course almost any single-action revolver is GREAT.

If you mean "fondling" yes it is wierd but could be an interesting thread. If you really mean "fonding" then I don't have a clue what you mean so I don't know if it's wierd or not.

There are 2 that are hard to live without.  The .45-70 Handi and the Marlin 1895.

Usually which ever one I am using the most at the time. Right now it's my 20ga TDC. Followed closelly by the 1940 H&R 12ga I just picked up. It was on the rack for so long it needs the extra attention.

I put a 22" iron sight 45/70 barrel on a BC 45/70 Frame and stock set.  This one is my current favorite, looks like a beefed up BC 45 Carbine and I didn't need to buy another die set.

Well the Topper 158 30-30 is nice to have laying across the lap, but the gun I handle the most is my Rossi 4" 357mag cause I use it the most and clean it every other night or so. Now if I am in one of those gotta oil a gun moods it always falls to my BAR Safari II 30-06 with the fancy stock and nice engravings cause it is the nicest gun I own in my book. (It always gets the "Can I see that???" question from visitors if it is sitting in the corner when they come around.

Mine is a sixshooter. It's a Taylor Smoke Wagon in .45 Colt that was custom timed and tuned by Cody Conagher.

To me that 1874 Long Range C. Sharps (an original) is always good to check the drool factor. Works every time I handle it.

Seeing a trend here, 1895 Marlin for me as well. I have been known to clean my P225 SIG a bit too long on occasion as well.

My 45-70 BC that I've refinished the stock on, adjusted the trigger, and weighted the stock with 19 ounces of lead.  I'll sit watching TV with it and squeezing off shots with a snap cap.

I reckon mine would be a dbl 12 ga ml. It is from the 1800's passed down through the family. Nothing fancy but well taken care of. I still use it today. I guess it is just the nostalgia of the days when poor folks had one gun for every use. It would fit many roles in what today we have to have many specialized guns for. In those days you bought a scattergun first and foremost, then maybe a ml rifle later on if you could afford one.

...FONDLING?!  :o  I think the Marines said it best:  "...this is my rifle, this is my gun..."   ;D

As long as we're talking firearms..it would have to be the .357 stubbed into a 12ga topper barrel.  Cheapest rifle I own, and the most fun.

You are talking about guns that you have and like to handle (fond) - nothing wrong with that ;)  Just to break the trend a little, my idea of a gun to "fond" is on that nice clean lines, good wood, bright blueing, maybe a little engraving. A Remington CDL comes to mind, but even better a CDL out of the custom shop or even better is a classic double shot gun - it just screams "pick me up".
