357 Herrett in carbine
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:10:26 AM »
Has anyone here ever worked with a 357 Herrett in a carbine length barrel?  Being a cartridge designed for a pistol, there is absolutely no loading data for the 357 Herrett in a carbine or rifle barrel.  I'm just wondering if anyone has fallen upon any loading data for it in a rifle.

A load from the handgun data should be fine in a rifle.

IMR 4227 over CCI 250 (large rifle magnum) primers works best for me with 158 gr. bullets.

I have a 357 Herrett in a 16 1/2" Handi.  I havent had a chance to shoot it much but any of the slower burning powders in the Herrett load data should be a little better in the carbine length barrel.

The 357 Herrett was designed to perform at it's best in a 10" barrel.  It should perform great in a carbine length barrel, but the 35 Remington will probably be a better all around cartridge and the brass is much easier to come by.  Don't get me wrong, I love the 357 Herrett, but it's original purpose has been outdone by the times.  I have 2 Contender barrels in 357 Herrett, but would'nt recommend a 357 Herrett over a 35 Remington to anyone.  The only advantage is the rim, which makes it much easier to extract in a pinch.

If you don't mind fiddling with a wildcat, then the 357 Herrett is a lot of fun, which is why I have two, a 10" and a 14".

Thanks for the info guys.  Truthfully, a friend of mine was tinkering with the idea of buying the barrel (and now he has it) so I thought I'd do a little digging for info for him.

Thanks again!

The 357 Herret is a fun cartridge to learn about reloading.  If you don't mind a little work, you will find an accurate cartridge with a large selection of bullets to choose from.  Are there better cartridges, sure depending on your needs, is it bad, not hardly.  As for loads, you guys will have to just try what has been tried and true and then experiment with slower powders.

I use 322 powder and a 200 grain Hornady in my 14 inch barrel. I just clocked it and the speed was 1970 FPS. A longer barrel should be faster don't you think?
