Blackhawk red dot mounting advice?

I have a Bisley,45colt,7.5" Blackhawk that I have been shooting open sighted and want to try a red dot on it. I plan to hunt deer in thick woods with it. Can I get an opinion on the best mount and red dot to use from someone that has set something similar up?

Lots of post's and opinions on this subject and the Wiegand mount (drill n tap) usually comes out the winner.

One question that you have to ask yourself is if you really want a couple of holes in the top strap of that fine bisley?...I did have this work done as most of the post's right here at GBO told of poor results with a detachable type.

My Red Dot is the Bushnell Trophy Red/Green model and I have no complaints. If you wanted to step up one, the Red Dot Ultra dot gets very good reviews. If you have the cash, a holo type like a burris fast fire is great just for the ability to see through and around that sight.

If you do decide to go with a dot, holo, or glass, The very affordable if not somewhat ugly Hogue monogrip is an excellent platform to launch a bullet from. I can post before\after pictures if you wish.

I consider my guns a tool not a work of art  so an extra hole or 2 dose not  bother me if the results are positive. I just want fast ,easy and accurate sighting.

Took one deer with the .44mag being completely stock, the 240gr XTP HP over some 296 caught it just ahead of the left shoulder with the bullet exiting behind the right shoulder @ 53 yds.
The deer ran 29yds and was down.

I did this setup mainly for the late season where longer shots at the yarded deer moving as a group seem to be more the norm for my particular area. In short, I wanted a setup for some comforatable shooting out to 100yds and this more than fits the bill. I took one deer to date with the dot (23yd shot  ) but had used my iron sight .45 in the regular season.

I look at it as being ugly as compared to the simple, clean lines of a sa but the setup is "groundhog accurate" out at the 100yd range. Seems to preform the same out to 130yds and have not shot farther than that.

  I had 2 Bushnell Trophy Red dots, on my SRH .44, one lasted on shot, the other lasted about 30 shots , I have a Bushnell Holosight that has stood up to 100's of shots.

My biggest problem was to keep the tube from moving back in the rings. I cured this on the THIRD INSTALLATION by putting a thin bead of the red loctite on the ring halves.

If I were to do a review I would say that three of the recticle choices are gimmick as the crosshair is kind of course and the 10 moa dot along with the 3 moa dot inside the 65 moa circle tend to hide the target.
This just leaves the 3 moa dot which is perfect.

Most of the reviews (over 50) were very good on the heavy recoil\holding zero issue and I will confirm this to be true. A few complained of the green light quitting and a lot said that re-sighting was necessary if one did choose to change recticles.

Mine has survived hundreds of shots since the fall of 2008. It points quickly but the Holo type is on my wish list just for the size and the advantage of being able to see around and through it.

Mounted a Burris FastFire II on my Old Model Blackhawk yesterday. Works well and is small and light. Was going to hit the range this morning but it's raining.
Will let you know after I sight it in.

I've also a Burris FastFire on my Ruger Bisly and love it.  It is small and accurate. The top of the fram was D&T'd for a thin flat bottomed Weaver base.   Also note the iron sights are still on the Ruger and if the Burris is removed (easily done with a Quarter) the Iron sights are instantly available.  A simple modification to the Michael's shoulder holster was easily done and the revolver carries as easily as before.  A joy to use.

I had a red dot on a 5 1/2" Super BH and it worked quite well in the thick stuff.  My mount was a T'sob that Mag-na-port installed for me and it did a fine job.  I did find that when it started to become dusk that the slight coating on the red dot did affect my ability to see in the thick stuff so I moved up to a scope and found I could still get on target quickly.  44 Man

Larry, I have seen and greatly appreciated your Bisley before this but unfortunately, after I had already done my work.

Can you share more on the specific's of that thin Weaver mount?...custom?...readily avalible?

The most important (to me) would be that the pre-existing holes be re-used but I would let the Smith decide that.
