converting dao revolver to double action?
« on: June 24, 2010, 12:00:25 PM »
j&g sales has used police revolvers that have no hammer spurs.  Can a gunsmith put a replacement hammer in one?
  thanks!

I believe there is more to them than a missing hammer spur.  They are internally modified to fire double action only.   They could possibly be converted back, but I doubt it would be worth the expense.

If it is a standard model I would think so.Most are pretty easy to open up and do the change. What is the model.

Having worked on Smiths for the last 35 years, I can't imagine that being a big change or an expensive one. K frame hammers are abundant.

May have to do a hammer and trigger, but I suspect the doa is nothing more than the cocking notch eliminated.

My guess is they simply bobbed the hammer.
Pull the trigger a little to get the hammer moving and then use your other hand to set the hammer taking your finger off the trigger.
If the hammer sets.  Then it is simply a bobbed hammer.
If it does not set it is a DAO and as Dee said, replaceing the the hammer and the trigger will simply be replaced.
and ta da.  DA/ SA revolver.
Other than that just use it as a DAO till you get the parts.
