Custom rifle on a budget
« on: May 18, 2010, 02:43:57 AM »
I have read you like custom rifle stories here so ,this
is mine that's been a year in the works.

My 6mm Rem Ackley imp project.

I started of with a 1903 Springfield sporter made in 1918.
It was bought online and ended up that it had a bad barrel.
Cost $ 199.00 +25.00 ffl.   Total.  $224.00

Next I found a straight unturned 6mm barrel online.
1-14 twist cost was great ,make  ???  $99.00

Then came time for the longgggggggggggggg wait to get
the work done. but the cost was real good and as I said it was a Springfield sporter ,It already had the custom safety on the bolt and custom bolt handle also.

My bill was for chambering and turning the barrel  and getting it all blued and he also cut the stock channel and glass bed this hog of a tube. 26" with 1 1/8 muzzle and a Leupold scope base, and setting it all up to shoot.                                    $200.00

The stock was a sale item at Richards a Rollover walnut with 2½ forearm and rose wood tip and grip cap.         $109.00

so far I have a total of $632.00
I did a little rob peter to pay paul on my other guns to get the rings and scope.

I still have lots of stock work to do and a very very nice member here cannon krazy gave me some brass to make a butt plate
for my stock.I also had to use a hole saw and hollow out the butt to add lead to get it to balance out a bit.

I will try and get photo's of it latter today,But I can't post them now
as I am going to go shoot her. and form some cases etc.;D  ;D I have been waiting a long time for this day.to windy and want's to rain so got some pics.

not sure how to get pics larger but if you click on them they will enlarge.

Nothing better than making your own custom rifle that turns out good.  I did it the easy way and screwed a $300 stainless McGowen barrel in 6.5x55 on a $250 Savage 110.  It will shoot less than half inch groups. I did add a lighter trigger spring and hone the sear and replaced the Tasco 3x9 and bases with a Leupold Long range 3x9 and one piece Bsquare base.  I opened up the barrel channel in the Savage stock for the first year's antelope hunt but I have an $80 unfinished Fajen I will put on this summer.
Looking forward to seeing your pict.    here's mine

nice springfield.
i've built a few sporters cheaply by picking up parts when i can get a good deal on them.
this one was put together from a yugo'd mod.98, i have approx $350 tied up in it.
when i got it it was in a vz-24stock and very rough but it had a new yugo 8mm barrel.

i put in in a freischutz classic stock from great americans bargain bin. put on a curved metal buttplate that i picked up for a couple bucks. reshaped the triggerguard & trigger, built a lever style release. shortened and reshaped the rear sight to resemble the tangent sight used on mauser sporting rifles then added the rear section from a kraig sight to make it windage adjustable. added a necg front sight and barrel baned sling swivel. i also did some trading for a rust blue job on it. some of the pics were taken before the rifle was blued.
