.270 AI Neck Sizing
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:15:21 AM »
Heres a question for the experts. I have a .270 AI, and I have been using standard .270 dies to parially neck size my cases. By partially, I mean the neck only gets sized on the top half or so if that.  I have to do this because if I adjust them in anymore, the die begins to reform the cases to standard .270 win. Anyway, I have these cases I have fired 4-5 times with this method, but they are losing neck tension towards the base of the neck. My question is, can I use lee collet .270 neck size dies to resize the entire neck of my cases? That is, will I be able to adjust them in enough without touching the shoulder of my AI cases? I have never handled these collet dies so I'm not too sure how they work. I really don't want to shell out 100+ dollars for a custom set of dies.

Before you buy another die , you may want to Annell the necks , this will soften the brass and allow the die to move it some more for better tention ( less spring back )

Theres a link to how to do it in the Links Sticky at the top of the forum .

I suspect your necks need anealing too. I seriously doubt that once you fired the case, that the part of the neck that was not getting sized did anything as far as holding a bullet. The brass is starting to harded and does not spring back after the sizing button goes through. - I bet ya.

yes
and yes
I have used them on 30-06 imp and 6mm rem imp and they work fine.
they put no pressure on a case the shell holder actually pushes the sleeve up in the die that works the collet.

You could go to Reddings bushing die. Then you can neck down to whatever holds the bullet in place. Kinda pricey, but they do work. Although, as others said, annealing is something that probably should be done. gypsyman

Excellent advice, I hadn't considered annealing my cases.
