Being a hunter safety instructor, I attended a refresher course where we get updated on various issues and two points stood out:
1) Air rifles are now legal for small game, but they must be capable of 600 fps. I guess I will stick with .22LR subsonics for most of that work, especially keeping in mind that the 500 ft rule still applies. As with any firearm, one must maintain a distance of 500 ft from any inhabited building when shooting, so there is a possibility that with small game opened to air rifles, DEC may well be watching air rifles closer.
(Before you try to debate "firearm" with me, read your 2009-10 NY Hunting & Trapping, pg16, column1.)
2) Not likely coyote season will be extended. Farmers & hunters would like it so, but trappers are fighting it..so far, the trappers are out ahead with the legislature.
