Reloading for my Contender????

I am going to reload for my 222  and my 30-30 Contender.

For my 222 Rem. I have brass already that has been shot from my gun. I want to shoot a 50gr. bullet(most likely balistic tips) anyone have any pet loads that shoots good for them out of a 10in barrel? This will be used for plinking and coyote hunting.

For my 30-30 like above all my brass has been fired out of my gun. I am looking to shoot 125gr. bullet (once again balistic tips) but open to another weight. Any good pet loads for a 14in barrel ? This will be used for deer hunting.

Also what kind of results do you guys get by just neck sizing?...or do you not suggest it?
Also to crimp or not to crimp?

I havent started loading for my 30-30 barrel yet but for my 7-30 waters im getting great results just neck sizeing just watch your  case leath. some of my brass for the 7-30 has been loaded 4 times and going strong.

I neck size for Contender reloading.

I don't crimp for single shot firearms.

      Neck sizing saves wear on your brass, it will also make your loads a lot more consistent.  If the brass doesn't have to 'puff' out to the chamber walls every time, then shot-to-shot consistency improves.
 
      The best crimp for the Contender is generally a light taper crimp but, with tight case necks, it make be unnecessary. Taper crimp die sets give you the option to crimp (some loads need it) or not for Contenders.

     In reloading for my Contenders, I have only used a crimp with straight walled pistol type cases and powders that needed a crimp for proper ignition(i.e. .44Rem Mag/H110 or WW296).  Only recently I've tried experimenting with a Lee factory crimp die on 22Hornet and 218Bee....no conclusion there ...yet.  I really did not feel the need to crimp the bottle neck cartridges at all....just tinkering ya know.

Ok, question for those of you who neck size.  Do you also index your cases?  The reason I ask is that it seems to me that unless your bore and chamber are perfectly concentric with each other then unless you insert the case in the chamber the same each time after it is formed to that chamber then you could be introducing stresses on the case which could affect accuracy.  If you full length size, then indexing is a moot point obviously.  I am thinking that neck sizing and indexing would go hand in hand in some instances (most factory non-custom barrels).  Am I over-thinking this?

BTW, I am not advocating any particular method here.  I just happen to partial size (try not to bump the shoulder back) with a full length die most of the time.

   I doubt if this will help you any. When i was shooting Contenders i full length resized. Now they say this is not proper. I never crimped anything. The only gun i neck sized only for was my Rem. 40x bench 222. In the Contender i shot Sierra 50 grain bullets useing IMR 3031 powder.

I neck size, no crimp. My 10" contender in .222 likes 24.8 grns BL-C2, 50 gr Hornady V-Max bullet and small rifle magnum primers. Very accurate. The BL-C2 has the added benefit of impressive muzzle flash

     I neck size for bottleneck cartridges, the 22 Hornet in particular, and a 7mmTCU. I don't index anything.  The reason to neck size is shot-to-shot consistency in the powder charge.  22 Hornet cases and 7mmTCU (which is 223 reformed) are cheap. I'm not the least concerned about stresses on the brass, just that the powder charge remains the same so, I have the same push on the bullet.

    If it were a 300 super-duper something Benchrest with Lapua brass, maybe, but it isn't.

Havent loaded the 50 grainers yet but do shoot H4198 with a 46JHP outta the 222 and get 2675 FPS The Hornady manual shows almost the same loads for the 45gr as the 50 gr bullets. I could go up 1.5 grs higher than my load but figured wouldnt be shooting over 150 yards so why bother.  Can tell ya if you shoot  H335 or other equivalent expect loud muzzle blast and a "purty" fireball.
