Weaver no tap scope mount for SBH?
« on: May 15, 2010, 04:36:19 AM »
Anybody have any expierience with these? Its either this or a Weigand mount that has to have 2 holes drilled and tapped. I saw at MidwayUSA that both mounts have good reviews and was hoping that the Weaver will hold up to the 44mag. I dont really want to have my SBH drilled on because it was given to me by my father for one thing and my gunsmith charges $20 per hole for another. The Weaver is $38 and the Weigland is $30 + $40 for the holes.

Thanks

I had three of these Weaver ( no gunsmith ) scope mounts on a couple of my handguns years ago. I didn't want to drill and tap the frame.

1- Older Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag- Never had a problem and stayed on zero.
2- Old Ruger Blackhawk 357 Mag- No problems and stayed on zero.
3- S&W 586-Shot competition with a Red Dot for years, again no problems.

I have taken these off my six-guns now and gone back to open sights ( less top heavy ). But I still have these mounts stored away just in case I need to use them again.

Oldhandgunner,

Are these the mounts that screw into the rear sight and clamp onto the barrel? When you removed them did they mark up or remove bluing?

Thanks

These are the ones that clamp on front and screw into rear sight hole.
They do leave a scuff mark on front but not bad. Not like having two or more holes that ruin the value of the gun and may weaken the frame.
My Stainless Redhawk wore the scope mount the longest probably 12 to 15 years. A little steel wool and Gibbs oil removed most of the rub marks.
The blued guns didn't have the mount on long enough to mark them.

Several manufactures make them. Weaver which I have two, but only on S&W 22, and 22 mag. Did have one on the S&W 29 for yaers with no problems. Good Luck Lou
