Anyone shoot the Barnes .357 XPB out of a rifle ?
« on: May 23, 2010, 08:09:41 AM »
I bought a box of 20 of these to see how they shoot out of a 18" barreled carbine in .357 mag.
Theres not much loading data out there for these bullets so I E mailed Barnes and asked about using H 110 or Lil Gun powder.
I got a short answer to that, they give me a loading of 13.5 15 grs. of Lil Gun under there 140 gr. XPB and said it should be OK in my carbine.
I havent yet loaded these or tried any other loads yet, seems if 15 grs. of Lil Gun is a max load for a 140 gr. bullet they will not be able to match anything close to jacketed lead bullets velocity.
I wonder if it is do to the long bearing surface of these bullets or are they designed to work best at handgun velocity and would fall apart at 400 fps more than handgun velocity that I think I would get out of the 18 " barrel ?
I did mention in my question to Barnes that I wanted to use them on deer / antelope using a rifle but they did not comment on if the bullets were up to that purpose ?
Do any of you have any experience with the 357 XPB on medium game or even shoot them in a rifle ?
They remind me of the original X bullets before they cut the grooves in them and made them the TSX bullet.  I had quite a time with those original X bullets to try to get them to shoot accurate or not give pressure signs at medium loads.    Jed
