280 Rem Bullet for Africa
« on: November 24, 2003, 05:01:45 AM »
I am going to Africa in June 2004 and will be bowhunting and using a rifle if the bowhunting does not prove rewarding.

I will use my 280 Rem in my Encore. What bullets would you recommend for Kudu, Gemsbock, Warthog, and impala. I need something to penetrate well.

I was thinking a Swift A frame in 150-160gr or maybe barnes. What do you think???

Thanks,
Kyle

I love swifts and can find no fault at all with them. However they are exceptionally tough and may not expand as well with the lower velocity of the Encore VS a rifle.

I used the Hornady interbonds last season and only recovered a single one from a Gemsbok, the only other bullet I recovered was from a 1000 lb bull elk this past October.  These may work better then the Aframe out of slower velocity guns. The clients using my rifle shot all the interbonds from a 30/06 and killed every single animal you mentioned and many more with that 156 grain bullet at 2900fps. I used that same load to take the elk. All but two exited the animals.

The 165 grain Interbond will be my bullet of choice from the 30/06 now and for the foreseeable future. If I were shooting a magnum cartridge the A frame would probably get the nod.  I have not seen enough recovered bullets from the interbonds from Magnum rifles yet. After Next season I will know more. We take 125 animals a year from the consession and I will certainly have hunters using them. My 30/06 is a loaner for clients who choose not to bring a gun. It takes about 35 big game animals a year or more for them.  With that resolution I know for sure what works in a short time.

Thanks for the reply.  I currently use the 140 Nos BTip at 3050fps for whitetail and hogs.   I knpw Hornady has a 139 Interbond.  Nosler is coming out with a 140gr Accubond.  Is 3000fps with a 140 too much???  Should I slow it down and go with a 150gr?

Also, have you had any experience with Arthur Rudman of Blaauwkrantz Safaris.  I will be with them June 10-20 2004.  I have talked to several clients and all loved it but I was wondering from a PH view.
