It's coming, it's coming!!!!!!!!! I can hardly wait :-)
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:43:23 AM »
I scrimped and saved, sold a couple of guns, and finally ordered it.

My new Springfield Stainless Trophy Match is on the way.  I saw some good deals on used ones on gun broker, but instead I bit the bullet, spent $200 more, and got one that is NIB.

I've purchased used stuff before, and a couple of times, I've been burned.  In one case, a perfectly new looking rifle (remington) was in the store with a great price on it.  The problem was that, when you pushed the safety off, about every tenth time or so it was accompanied by a round discharging.

The second was a gun that had an ever so slightly bent receiver, probably from a bad job with a barrel wrench.

I figured that, with new, if it isn't perfect, it's Springfield's problem, and everything that I've read tells me that they have good CS.

I'll send pics when it gets here.

Awesome.  I've read a bunch of good things about that model.  It's one of the models I'm considering when I get my "accurate" 1911 in the future.  I have a Mil-spec at the SA Custom Shop right now but it's just having small changes done not geared to accuracy for the most part.

IT CAME!!!!!  Beautiful.  I'll write a full range report later, but...

Tight, very tight.

Fit excellent, except for one thing (slide stop plunger too long.  Polished off about .004", and functions perfectly.  It just wouldn't go in without this modification)

Trigger good, crisp, no creep, guessing, more than 4, less than 5.

Did I mention that it is TIGHT!!!!!?  Everywhere?  Obviously hand fit.

AGGGRRREEESSSIVE front strap checkering.  I'm gonna have to play some golf, or get a real job.

Looks good, but will it shoot?

Hey William, we definitely need to go shooting.  I certainly could use some mentoring on my 1911 technique.  I think that I'll be satisfied with my additional wait to get the TM, we'll see.

Well, I got my new TM out this morning.  Did I mention that the thing is tight?

Well, it is.

I loaded my first magazine with Hornady Jacketed SWC 200 Gr bullet in front of a little ww 231 (don't remember exact charge, it's written down in the garage).

It ran that clip like a champ, and it was scary accurate (man o man)

So, I loaded the next mag with my standard lead bullet load, a Lee 228 452 pushed by 4.7 ww 231.

Did I mention that this gun it tight?  Well, so is that chamber.  I got a FTF jam with the casing jammed tightly into that match chamber, really tightly, to the point that I had to push the slide back by using the side of a wooden table.

So back to the Hornadys I went.  They loaded and shot great.  The only FTF was when the mag didn't seat all the way, so operator error on that one.

I ran 100 rounds through it, then tried the 228 bullet again.  The 228 jammed again (match chambers are tight.  Did I mention that this thing is tight?)

Well, except for operator related issues, I am VERY pleased.  It is truly a one hole tack driver.  Nothing wiggles.

One other quick note, the trigger was very good NIB.  After about 100 rounds, it is very, very good, real close to downright excellent now, and this is coming from a guy whose standard is the Jewell BR for match benchrest rifles.

I'll post some pics and write a little more later, after I get a chance to work on my handloads.

NICE pistol.  Good job Springfield.

You should probably get a cartridge checking gage like those from Dillon, Their catalog number is H71-15166.

If the reloaded cartridge fits in the gage and not the pistol's chamber, then the chamber is too tight.  If it won't fit the gage, check your reloading die settings.  You might also find one brand of brass or another doesn't work.

Brass expands with use to fit the largest chamberof guns you shoot.
I have heard of this with Baer's---and others.
Resizing might work.
Depends on the resizer though.
Was the casing hard too extract after locking the slide back?
Lots of other thoughts going thru my head.

Yep; the brass will need resizing.  The match chamber will need its own brass kept seperate from other brass of that caliber.   And skarke ; congrats on your newby. ;D 8)

OK boys,

I promise, pics this week.  I was in Florida all last week for a meeting.  It sure looked nice out of the window.  I've never understood why corporations fly its empoyees to these nice places, only to work our butts from 7 to 6, then have a company mixer at night at some chain restaurant.  Anyway, I digress.

Well, I screwed the seater die in a full turn, then added about a quarter turn on th Lee Factory Crimp Die, and voila, feeds GREAT!!!!!!

Did I mention that this particular 1911 fits nicely?

Well, my son and I took it out to the range today, and ran 300 rounds of 452 228 Lee RN pushed by Wolf primers and 4.7 of 231, and not a single mis anything.

It flat shoots, certainly better than I.  It is breaking in nicely now, and after a good cleaning, a little slide grease and lube, it slides like fine machinery (which it is).

I'll post some pics, and if I can figure this video stuff out, maybe a short clip for youtube on fit and finish.  Thanks for the interest, I'm pretty happy.

BTW Flint,

I bought a Wilson Cartridge gauge, and it is a very handy tool.  Interestingly, the original loads that I attempted to feed fit the cartridge gauge.  However, a little deeper seating and a slightly tighter crimp fixed all my problems, and the new loads shoot just fine (as well too) in my other 1911.

Until I see it in person--which will be soon, I hope---or you give us some Pics, all we have to talk about is how the new gates work. :D
I would like to get together later in June when my road rage has been put behind me and the range has dried some--tis the season for mosquitoes.

Hey Skarke....that's fuuny about travel for work...my late father-in-law used to marvel at all the places I've been for work.  Finally...I just told him the thruth..if ya blindfolded me, put me on the plane and then brought me to the hotel, I'd have no clue where I was at nor would it make the slightest bitta difference......

And here's some review, I'll be brief.

The Trophy Match (or TM for short) is excellent in most every way.

1.  Accurate
2.  Great trigger
3.  Fit, finish, and good looks are all present, and abundant
4.  The checkering is aggressive, but I've pumped a whole bunch of rounds down the tube now, and I like it
5.  Look at the back of the two 1911s, and study the slide to frame fit on the TM.  This is a WOW for me.

A few notes

The slide release plunger on the TM should have been right, it really isn't excusable to need adjustment NIB, but I fixed it.
The marks underneath the slide release are small, and I'd have eventually scratched the slide also, but they really shouldn't be there either.

For comparison, I showed a few pics of a PT 1911.  The PT 1911 is an excellent pistol for the $450 NIB, but as I've stated, NO AVAILABILITY of adjustable sights for or from Taurus is freaking stupid.  Other than that, it is a best buy in its price range.

I will replace the front sight on the TM with a small dot.

Hope you like the pics.

I like it---A WHOLE BUNCH.
You did a good job selecting this one.
Scratches---they are like dents/dings in new cars---you can't keep it pristine---besides that, it is a character builder.
I can't wait too see it in person---or---I want to play with it.
I like the grips.
