What should I get tomorrow?
« on: May 22, 2010, 04:03:50 PM »
Going to a Gun Show in Fredericksburg, VA tomorrow.  What should I buy?

Looking at my wish list but can't decide on one only.

.45-70 if you don't have one.  The .30-30 or .357 would be good second choices.

I know this is an unfair question.  Can even be a non H&R (bite my lip).  Anything in the gun world sounded good lately.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, get an AR15. DO NOT especially buy a stripped lower and LPK (lower parts kit) or an upper. They can be as addicting as Handi's but more expensive., Erector sets for big kids who like guns, tinkering, and putting things together, as well as those who enjoying swapping and switching parts, that's what they are. But FUN, and very accurate as well. A couple + years ago I got a free AR15 grip in the old "Pay it Forward" thread, that was the beginning, then I swapped a Handi barrel for a stripped FN AR barrel, there has been no looking back....<><....:)

I was bit by the AR bug about this time last year.

Now I have built 12 complete AR's and have several stripped lowers and boxes of other assorted parts.  :o

Mike,

45/70 for a 45/120 project?

500 S&W?

If you do buy an AR15/M4 you had better reload for them.  Buy the carbide dies also as the "Black Guns" have big appetites for ammo.

I know your pain (and joy) dave29, I got hit a little over 2 years ago and am still having FUN!!! I am waiting for a couple of boxes of extraneous used parts now and will enjoy putting stuff together and swapping stuff around in a few more days. Building AR's is like playing with Legos on steroids.

Bikerbeans, I do reload but have also put away the obligitory anti-zombie cache of SHTF ammo. I have some M4's but much prefer the A1's and A2's, it's my age I guess. I even like the iron sights, easy 1" to 2" groups at 100 yards with my 20" barreled rifles. I am now contemplating a 24" SS heavy fluted barreled coyote getter, I don't need it since I can reach out and touch any average coyote to about 300 yards with my A2's now but I am sure you all know how it is, I don't HAVE a 24" SS heavy fluted barrreled AR, yet....<><....:)

Well I am Back…
Bigvarmint I took your advice and got 2.
There was only 1 Handi rifle left in the whole show.
No 45-70 govt…
no 30-30 Win…
no 357 Mag…
no 38-55 Win…
no 375 Win…
no 358 Win…
no 338 ME…
no 444 Marlin…
no 223 Rem…
no 9.3x74R…
no 500 S&W…
The AR has not bite me yet… I have looked at a DPMS 260LR for a couple of years.

I got an 18.75” 44 Mag Handi.  The box has SB1-44T, but the receiver has SB2.
The other gun I got is a Ruger SA  SS 5.5” Vaquero Bisley 44 Mag.
Also got 100 rounds of Hornady LE 357 Mag 140 gr. and 100 rounds of Hornady LE 44 Mag 225 gr.
Full rack of Baby Back Ribs at a nearby restaurant, someone should have joined me.

the ribs sound good, but it is a little far to drive for only one handi , I went to a local show here last weekend, fairly small and they only had two handis in the whole place, a 223 and a 243 with plain stock, cheap scope and $350 each. I let him keep them  ;D

I've found that's the case around here. It's easier to find an honest lawyer than it is to find a Handi Rifle at a gun show.

The box has SB1-44T, but the receiver has SB2.

Mike,

You probably mean the barrel is marked SB2, frames aren't normally marked except for the right side of SB1 357 and 44 mag rifle frames which state only 357 and 44mag and shotgun barrels can be used on it. The SB1-44T is a Talo Trapper, they're available in 357mag also, and in 45-70 on SB2 frames, congrats on the new guns.  ;)

Quick, you are right of course.  I just remembered the SB2 when I was looking at the gun itself.  Thanks

SB2 marked barrels on SB1 rifles has caused a lot of confusion in the last year or so, almost as much as the SB2 designation on USH and 10ga shotgun frames, makes ya wonder what H&R was thinking when they do stuff like that!!  ::) :-\
