Plans Ruined because of Snow and Sleet
« on: December 13, 2003, 09:10:25 AM »
I had big plans for today. I was going to run what few traps I had out and set traps the rest of the day. I got off to a good start. I caught a coyote in a snare, so now I was going to get to spend some time in the fur shed. After running traps and gasing the trcuk up it was around 10:00 a.m. and it started snowing. Now it is still snowing and sleeting with everything including the roads covered. My mom won't let me out to drive so I can't go today, but I don't blame her. I drove up to the store about an hour ago and slid off into the ditch 3 times. Thank God I have a 4-wheel drive or I would probably still be there.

Also I would like to mention that coyote I caught this morning was full of burrs. So full that it has a few bald spots orund the shoulder area. I brushed it out good and you really cant tell. Has anyone else ever seen this?

Happy Trapping,
Zach Ellis :wink:

KY;
  Burrs in coyotes?  Surely not. :wink:  Around here the cockle burrs are thick and you can sure spend some time combing.  But better to comb them out than to be scraping and cut a hole in the hide where a burr was hidden.  A lot of our coyotes have burrs.
For Sale: Old wore out trapper - rode hard, put up wet, high milage and earned every mile.

Rascal: It's weird though. I snared this coyote in a fence where I have also snared 4 other ones this year. The other 4 were all males with very few burrs. This one was my first female and she was absolutely FULL of burrs. I know I spent an hour combing and picking them out. One of the fields on one side of the fence is full of burrs and this is the field where most of the coyotes come from. I figured a female would be cleaner than a male. I guess women are really nasty, but just cover it up with make-up and perfume. :)
