SBH End Shake
« on: June 17, 2010, 06:15:24 PM »
I have a new 4 5/8" SBH, around 100 rounds fired and after reading about b/c gap and endshake I decided to check mine.  The gun shoots great, it is very accurate.  The b/c gap is .009" and the end shake is .006".  This seems to be excessive, especially for a new gun.  Should I contact Ruger?

Thanks

My SBH in 44 Mag has terrible endshake.... until I load it up. The case rims seem to determine the endshake on SBH. Not a really technically pure way of doing it, but so be it. Put some cases in the gun and measure again and let us know. I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised.

If it's still too much buy brass with thicker rims  :D.

You can of course shim the front of the clyinder and adjust headspace and endshake. Brownells sells the parts as does Ron Power of Power Custom I think they call it a cylinder bushing, but I don't recall exactly.

When loaded with cases nothing changes, .009" b/c gap and .006" end shake.

I'd contact Ruger. "Shimming" the cylinder will not change that overly large B/C gap.

I just contacted Ruger, the lady who was pretty uninterested in my questions informed me that the gun is in spec.  Their b/c gap spec is .002-.010" and she would not give me a real answer on the end shake.  Guess I will call back and try to get someone else.

I just called back and talked to Gil, I told Gil the measurements taken on my SBH and his immediate response was, "we need that gun back here sir."  He scheduled a time for UPS to pick up my gun to return to Ruger.

I have to ask this. If it shoots great why are you worried about it? Is it unsafe to shoot that way?

From the reading I have done end shake can/will worsen with firing, when it it gets to .005" it can become a problem and I am already over .005" with a new gun.

I agree that b/c gap is really big. It's strange to me that nothing changes with the cases, but yes, on that basis it sound out of spec. Good luck!
