Ruger Mark or 22/45
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:08:59 AM »
Guys I am not an auto 22lr fan, but I have a hankering for an accurate auto to shoot squirrels with. I have had a Buckmark (hated it!!!!) that was very accurate, but it just didn't do it for me. I sold it off. I currently have a S&W 422 6" that is scary accurate, but it is wore out and I can't afford to spend $1k for a Model 41 like I would like to have.

Now here is my question --- A Ruger Mark 3 Hunter 4.5" or a 22/45 Hunter 4.5" or a Mark 2 Bull Barrel 4"?????????

I don't want to get into the long barreled thing due to weight and the cumbersome feel. I may scope it or may just shoot irons, but I want to be able to shoot squirrels with it.

I have the practice as I currently shoot them with both my single six 6.5" and the 422.

I like my GOVT. Model , its 6 3/4 but a bull in 4 would be nice . OR a 6 3/4 slab sided gun . I don't care for the plastic grip frame on the 22/45
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

While I understand the varying opinions on the 22/45 I have to rave about it's accuracy. mine is a great squirril gun. I have a pretty good quality red dot on it and have taken them at well over 40 yards. Used ones are still in the $200 to $250 range and will probably out live your kids.

I think I have settled. I believe it will be the Ruger MKIII Hunter SS 4.5" fluted barrel with fiber optics and possibly a red dot. See pic.

I haven't bought it yet so please don't stop the opinions. It will be at least a couple of weeks.

It is on if I can get a gun sold shortly (think that is taken care of). Found the Hunter SS for $369.

Well the $369 MKIII was gone by the time I got down there to get 3 days after I found out about it. I also got a chance to look at the MKIII Hunters at Bass Pro yesterday and I changed my mind on the barrel length. I will be getting a 6 7/8" barrel due to the better balance.

Well I went and dun it!!!! I posted the full story on the Handgun Hunting page, but I ordered a Dealer's Exclusive Stainless Steel Mark III Standard 6" with fixed sights. I will float out the Ruger sights and float in some adjustable rear sights if needed.
