Hip Holster for 5" S&W629
« on: February 20, 2011, 02:47:52 PM »
I've got a S&W  5" 629 on order. I'd like a regular hip holster for use while hunting. I would like a holster that is made specifically for the 5" N frame. (No 4" or 6") Any suggestions??

VH, no help here but, I own a 5" 500 X frame and am having a terrible time finding a holster for it? Even tried some of the people who raise plastic for holsters.  Seems holster manufacturers have forgotten us guys with nonstandard barrel lengths? Best of luck in your search.

Get a 6 inch holster and have a leather shop cut it down , use it long or order the correct size from El Paso saddlery. Would be my suggestion . I had one and used the 6 inch holster cut down.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Galco makes a nice one called a dual position pheonix if you like a thumb brake.

Of all the holsters mentioned I decided to go with your suggestion of the Galco Pheonix Duel Position. Lots of good 5" holsters discovered thanks to the input provided here.

Thanks guys

I hope you like the Galco.  I used the same revolver and holster combo on a succesful handgun hunt for deer in 2010.
By the way, you can get a replacement post front sight (or black ramp) for the 629 classic that drops in by hand.

My 629 is still on order. What would be the purpose/advantage of the replacement sights?

I have a Galco holster made for the 5" N frame.
Not sure if they still make it.
It is a thumb snap model that can be either strong side or cross draw depending on how you attach your belt.
For some reason I remember the 4" K frame number was a 104 Pheonix. and the 6" is a 106 but my minds eye can not see the back of the holster for that model.  Sorry.

I also have a Galco phoenix holster for my 6" Colt Anaconda. The same holster also fits my 6" 29.

Now I just need one for my 6" 19 and I'll be set.

The Galco Pheonix is still currently available in a configuration made specifically for the 5" S&W N frame revolvers. Here is what it looks like. (This may be a 4" version pictured)

I prefer the sight picture of all black sights.  I black out the white outline on the rear and change out the front to a post front sight.  The post catches less sunlight and gives you a sharper sight picture than the ramp.  For self defense duty or hunting dark hogs then the original red ramp might be better.  The ramp style is a little smoother out of some holsters.  S&W also offers a sight kit for the classic with about 5 different styles of sights so you can see what you like best.  I think the interchangeable sights is one of the best features of the 629 classic series.
