8" VH Shroud difference.
« on: June 18, 2010, 12:49:48 PM »
I have a SS 44mag Palmer made. I just bought a 8" shroud for it which came from a Norwich gun. The shroud will not go on far enought to fit tight to the frame. The roll pin on my Palmer made is longer than a Norwich gun. So should I drill the roll pin hole in the shroud deeper or should I just  shorten the roll pin on the frame so the shroud will fit tight to the frame. The shroud that came with the gun was a 4" with the muzzle brake shroud.

Either way will solve your problem, if you're going to get more Norwich or CZ/DW barrel/shroud sets; the pin would solve future problems.  Interesting that Norwich changed the spec's as I've got shrouds from both Palmer and Monson and they all interchange on my Monson gun.  I do know that Norwich built all new milling machines for their line of DW's as the palmer machines were from Monson and quite dated.  CZ acquired all the original Norwich machines.

Got a plastic hammer and with a few taps on the roll pin it moved back far enough to get the shroud to butt up against the frame. Installed the barrel set the gap put on the shroud and barrel nut got everythin snugged up and went to close the cylinder new surprise the ejection rod is a tad too long to fit in the shroud cut out for the ejection rod on the cylinder. Now I have to have the cut out machined longer  so the rod will fit in it. There is definatley a difference in a Palmer made gun and a Norwich made gun. This is turning out to be not the bargain I thought I had.

Got some good info from a gun smith, he told I could shorten the ejection rod. He told me something I didn't know is that the ejection rod screws out of the cylinder. Well as I went to unscrew the rod discovered that it was loose and it had backed out a couple of turns. I screwed it in tight and it turns out that the rod now fits in the cut out for it in the shroud. What a relief I was ready to mill the cut out longer so the rod could fit.
