22 WMR
« on: May 13, 2010, 01:10:11 PM »
In the future I was thinking of getting a barrel in 22 WMR.  Are they made anymore or would it have to be a custom barrel?

Has anyone here tried one of these?

Barrels are available thru the Custom Shop in both pistol and rifle length.

I had a 22 WMR barrel for awhile.  I finally decided it wouldn't do anything a 17 HMR or 22 LR wouldn't do and sold it.

I have had one for a couple of years and like it and it shoots great but a little pricey on the ammo.

There is now a WMR offered with a lite bullet [20gr?]. That could make this much more useful for a variety of varmits. Price is a factor tho.

Unfortunately, the 22WMR developed a reputation for poor accuracy over the years.  I shoot a 10" and a 16.5" and both are superbly accurate with most of the ammo I've tried.  Ammo is a little pricey, but no more than the 17HMR.  My 16.5 barrel often accompanies me on turkey hunts.  Also shoot a Win 9422M that I'm quite fond of.  Always had a yearn for a Ruger M96 in 22WMR with a scope mounted(just can't bring myself to put one on the little Winchester).  I use a rifle scope on the 16.5" barrel, but shoot it as a handgun with a modified Taco type hold. :D

a long time ago I had a 10" 22 mag. this barrel would jump bad when I fired it from a rest. I was thinking about putting a break on it just to keep it in place when I fired it.

With the new .17 HM2 you will get better results out of the shorter tume of a T/C then you will the 22 Mag. and the 17 HM2 is less money then the 22 mags.

In my neck of the woods 22 wmr ammo is much cheaper than 17 hmr.   After researching costs , it seems I can buy 22 wmr ammo cheaper than jacketed bullet 223 reloads. I think I might order a custiom barrel for 22 wmr.

Used 22 WMR barrels show up in the classifieds from time to time. I picked up a 10" barrel recently that is very accurate with Remingtons 33 gr Accutip-V ammo. It did not group as well with Federals 40 gr FMJ load. Those are the only loads I have tried in it so far. I fired one of the Accutips into a 2 liter pop bottle filled with water from about 15 feet. The bottle made a good jump and water sprayed everywhere. There was a split from top to bottom on the back of the bottle but the bullet did not exit. It did expand to .72" which I thought was impressive.
