an honest six shots on a hot/gusty day from an M99
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:06:40 AM »
Savage 99 .308 at 100 and 200
ignore the bottom dot, was shooting at the upper, no slow fire or wait, except to move it out to 200
after the 100 yd shots
temp >80's, some mean gusts crosswind left to right

is this fantastic, no, but its not bad imo
can the gun do better? yep
can the shooter do better? sometimes

gettin some copper out, recently shot six .312 bullets down the tube...oops...

at the range kickin it

That gives new meaning to the term "windage adjustment", eh ?  ;)

BTW, That looks like fine shooting to me - but what do I know ?    ;D   ;D

My peep-sighted, mid-50's Model 99-EG .300 did about the same this week, w/factory 150gr @ 100yds - no wind.

well the point was to make three shots at 100 then 200  REAL time, no jacking around editing targets, starting over etc.  boom, boom, boom  move it out to 200 and repeat.  in less than ideal conditions.  the loads were arbitrary. not worked up and down and optimised.   a "lets see what the gun will do".

I have an ancient 99 in .300 that is a shootin sob. case hardened lever, oil finish stock, cast or forged in swivel on the barrel.

unfortunately it is not drilled and tapped

I actually prefer the box magazine of the new one to the older one's rotary.

That's good shooting, but the rifle will probably do better with some handloads it "likes".  It is not uncommon for a Savage Model 99 to shoot 3/4 inch to 1 inch, 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

My own 1953 Model 99 "EG" mostly shoots under an inch at 100 yards if I do my part.  I'm a member of Savage 99 Forum at another site and we see newbies coming into the Forum who often express surprise at how accurate their Model 99s are... even if shooting factory-loads.

The Savage Model 99 rifle proves that lever-action rifles CAN rival bolt-action rifles in accuracy if the design and quality are built into them and Arthur Savage designed a great rifle to prove it.

No doubt about it... the Model 99 Savage rifle is a fine, precision-made level action rifle, but too expensive to make in a market-place that demands low prices.

This large bodied muley was taken at approx 225 yards from steady rest.  My ammo was FEDERAL Classic featuring 180 grain bullet.  The buck bolted at the shot but toppled after a couple jumps.  Penetration was 100%.

My 99 Savage has always shot tighter groups with 180 grain ammo.  This bullet weight is probably overkill for a 250 lb mule deer but is perfect for elk which weigh 550 - 700 lbs.  I zero for 225 yards:  2.5 inches high at 100 yards.

My scope is a compact 4X by TASCO built back in 1980's when this company was based in Japan.  I don't shoot past 250 yards because of this magnification.  Why not upgrade to a 2X - 7X variable?  Answer:  I don't like changes and this rifle/ scope has put a lot of meat on our table.  I'll either get closer or pass on the animal for another day.
