Thompson Center "Rifled Slug Choke Tube" 12 gauge Encore
« on: February 17, 2012, 11:33:36 AM »

I ordered this recently, but I'm not quite sure what it is.  I was initially looking for an extended choke for shooting foster slugs (commonly called "rifled slugs") in my Encore turkey barrel.  To make a long story short, I ended up with this item.  It is called a Thompson Center Rifled Slug Choke Tube.  I believe this was stock from the closing of the custom shop. Is this for shooting Foster slugs?, sabot slugs? Brenneke slugs?, something else?  It measures close to a cylinder bore. ~.725"

Update: I should have read the enclosed sheet.  It says it is for use with foster slugs or sabot slugs.

say what kind of accuracy has that been giving you?

especially compared to a smoothbore? (rather the barrel with a reg choke in it?)

thanks

I haven't been able to test it much yet.  The rear sights of the turkey barrel ran out of range to compensate where the slugs were landing.  If I remember correctly the slugs were hitting low on the target at 50 yards perhaps 6 or 8 inches. The only other choke I have for the barrel is the turkey choke which is too tight for slugs.  I might be able to mount a peep sight on it with higher adjustment, but haven't tried it yet.  Although it was low on the target, it seemed to group better than shooting my vented rib bead sight Rem. 870 with slugs, but that may not be a fair comparison because of different sights.

If you hold the same point of aim on the target and don't adjust anything for 3 or 4 shots it will tell you if that particular slug will     "group". You can test different slugs for group and might find one that groups higher on the target while you look for sights. ear
