45/70 loads with trailboss
« on: June 05, 2010, 06:58:06 PM »
hey guys finally bit the bullet and got dies, powder, primers, and bullets for my 45/70.  Gonna use trailboss if i dont like it i can still use it in my 44 special so any words of widsom to a novice reloader.  By the way an experienced reloader is only 1/4 mile down the road so hopefully i will keep all my fingers and toes :)

Any input is welcome and yes i will try other bullets and powders in the future.

Trail Boss is a good powder for light loads, but some people have had trouble getting it to meter consistently. If you use a mechanical powder measure, check you charges with a scale regularly, and inspect each round before seating a bullet.
If you have poor accuracy at first with TB using starting loads, chances are it will get better as you get closer to maximum charges. True for most powders, but especially so for TB.
Trail Boss should never be compressed, not an issue in .45-70, but make sure your bullet is not compressing it in .44 spl.
Load 'em up and enjoy.
