Gonna give the 710 a shot---opinions???
« on: February 22, 2011, 01:12:04 AM »
Hey guys,
Now before I open up a can of worms because I think most of the entire world dislikes this gun, haha. I got a really good deal on a package(gun w scope---junky scope that is) on a NIB 300 win mag in model 710. Trigger sucked, action feels kinda rough. I put it on paper at 50yds to make sure it functioned correctly. I had to take another to my gunsmith so I thot what the heck, I hadhim bed the action, float the barrel and work on the horrible trigger. Now considering what he had to work with, everything seemed to go well with it, haven't shot it yet, and wont till I get decent glass on it, was wondering what kind of accuracy I may see from it. I honestly don't think 1in groups @ 100 is too much to ask,  just thot Id ask the experts. Thanks guys

Scooter, my son bought 1 a while back and it is a real shooter, very accurate. It's a 30-06 and will shoot 1in groups at 100 yds all day. That being said, the third time he took it to the range the magazine latch broke. I'm finaly getting around to fixing it, the parts are around $17 including shipping, but are on backorder and it will be about 3 weeks before they arrive. The latch itself is plastic, and not very substantial ,and ther is a spring and pivot pin that fit in a slot in the stock.I would never be confident in the field that it won't happen again at any time.It would be a shame to have a hunt spoiled for a $17 part.

I've noticed that most of the gun is cheaply made, hadn't really noticed the latch, ill keep an eye on it, thanks for.the heads up. Id be satisfied with 1in groups, hopefully mine will do it, thanks for the info

The 710 is usually very accurate.  Most of the time they will shoot less than 1" at 100 yards.

Thanks for the replies guys, Brit, the stocks aren't glued in, they have 3 bolts holding the barrel/receiver in, howbeit the recoil lug is odd compared to the few M700s I've had apart, its a seperate piece, I found that to be a little different, and the trigger assembly isn't removable, like other rifles I've seen, as for why I bothered with it....Im not real sure haha, I just like tinkering with em and seeing what they'll do. Swampman, I hope this one shoots good, hopefully ill getta find out soon, thanks again

Thank you for the reply. I have only seen them from a few feet away and that's close enough to know I don't like them. One chap I used to converse with on the net brought one in 30-06 for range use and after a few months the bolt stop broke allowing the bolt to come right out of the action.

It shot OK with surplus ammo however if it was me I would have been looking to another make one with less problems and a better reputation.

I hope yours behaves and shoots OK ................... Hmmm need a fingers cross emoticon!

I see big greens promotion team on GB is one the case  ::) sad really.

I like my Remington rifles and shotguns too for that matter. I own no other brand of bolt action rifle but I would not own a model 710. Good luck with it but that's an experience I'll pass on.

The 710 is a low priced rifle without the frills nothing more, nothing less. If it's got a good barrel it should shoot well.

got to agree. the ones ive handled were but ugly and cheap looking. Personaly for the same money id hands down perfer one of the savage stevens guns and im a reminton fan. If you really want a remington step up to the adl. The local walmart is selling cammo stocked adls for 440 with a cheap 3x9 scope mounted. Much better deal in my opinion.
