Think like a Russian

I was reminded of the Clint Eastwood movie Firefox tonight where he is told he must "think in Russian."  Went pig hunting with a buddy and took the Nagant and like an idiot, I short-stroked the bolt like a pampered American rather than slamming that thing back like an angry Russian.  So next time out I will try to think like a Russian.

If it'll make you feel any better...I did that to a Savage model 10 a few months ago then had another shot opportunity a bit later.Fortunately the cat sat there and let me chamber a round and actually shoot it on the second try.

My Savage is a bit more forgiving on short-strokes.  The Nagant stovepiped and jammed the next round halfway out of the magazine.  It was a nightmare.  Thankfully my buddy was able to shoot 3 pigs before they were all out of sight.

Nutz!  Think like a soldier not a Roosion.  Roosions don't know how to think any better'n anyone else.  Bolt rifles are supposed to be worked hard and worked by the open hand or palm, not like a wuzzy with the thumb and forefinger.  You can wuzzy out with a sporter if you're afraid you're going to hurt it but I haven't ever seen a man break off a factory bolt handle (seen a few welds on mil-surp sporters come apart but it takes more than one round before they snap).

Alright Ladies listen up: To properly cycle the bolt action rifle Model 1903, 1903A3, 1914, 1917 and any Mauser and just about every bolt sporter I can think of, you address the bolt smartly with the open palm of the right hand with sufficient force to raise the bolt handle in one swift positive move - don't drag it out sonny as the other guy is workin' his Mauser rifle faster'n you're working your rifle - and with the same force and speed use the open palm to pull the bolt all the way (notice I said all the way girls) to the rear and then again with the open palm decisively shove the bolt forward to strip the round from the magazine fully into the chamber and in one continuous move yet again with the open palm use sufficient force to close the bolt downward and ready the rifle for firing..................  A US Army Drill Instructor taught me that after he caught me wuzzying the bolt on a 03A3.  I have simply repeated his wording here, minus a few invectives, for your clarification......................  Yer fren Mikey.

 Thats sound advice.While I was completely inexperienced with bolt guns before my Mosin,its clear its built like a tank. It just felt natural to me to slam that bolt around and none of mine have every given me any sort of malfunction (except for surplus round that was a dud,and a few that took a second time through to fire.)

 The other day I was looking at a Enfield at a pawnshop and the girl behind the counter couldnt get it closed. I told her "That things probably been through a couple of full scale wars,nothing you can do to it with your bare hands is going to break,just slam it closed"

 Actually,thinking like a Russian tells you to thin your gun oil with diesel fuel when the temperature drops down to -20C. I do wonder how modern oils work in extremely cold climates. Are they going to turn to sludge like the old stuff did back in WWII?

I slam every bolt closed no matter what it is.  When hunting in that mode and put what gun you have aside.  I slam my mosin bolts as hard as i slam my 700 remington in 338wm.  Trust me the shell is going in the chamber for sure.  I just get into the zone/mode.  If you hurt it shame on it....

One thing to think about when hunting with your buddy's.  I told my brother if we jump a pack of yotes i'd poke the ones were i can get doubles or tripples and he can poke the singles.  I'd like to take out the whole pack, I hate yotes.  If there closer i'd use my 1911 on the bastards.

I did not short stock the bolt of my first rifle while hunting but I did forget to pull the trigger.  I jumped a white tail buck and started working the bolt on my No. 4 Mark1 enfield as quick as I could.  I managed to empty the magazine but the deer go away!  I then looked down and found a pile of loaded ammo scattered around my feet.  Just goes to show how buck fever can affect you.
