This lonely sole was just sitting there today staring at me with puppy eyes.  From the looks, someone bought it and fired a box or less of ammo before getting scared off and trading it in.  I'll give it a good home.  :-)

Its a 15" barrel with open sites - what kind of (dis)comfort am I in for shooting this thing?  I've got the same gun in 30-06 - how should the recoil compare?

With a 400 gr at 1800 fps or so there is no comparison.  Especially witha 500 gr at 1600 especially if it has no muzzle brake.

My Encore 12' 45/70 is a puppy dog to shot with factory (trap door) loads.  From there it's up to your tolerance how hot you want to load it.  Just watch out for your fingers on the trigger guard.  I have load up into Ruger Number 1 load range and that was ok, but not something you want to shot all day.  I have not loaded any full power Number 1 loads and don’t really feel there is much need for me to do so.  Although I may need to shot a deer through a 6" tree someday, so maybe.... lol

Oh by the way this barrel is Mag-Na-Ported.

With IMR 3031 I have fired full house Ruger #1 loads through mine.  I don't advise that with the 405's, I still have 16 of the 20 I loaded and a friend shot 2 of them in his #1 and gave up.  300 and 350's are comfortable.

And no you don't have any idea what you are in for.  Have fun.
