Lee-Enfield Firing Pin Removal Tool
« on: November 19, 2003, 04:35:36 PM »
Hello all

Lee-Enfield .303 British No. 4 Mark I

Can anyone tell me how deep to bore out the 1/4" (0.250") hole in this tool?  I know that it has to be deep enough to allow the two lugs catch the firing pin lock screw, but shallow enough to depress the firing pin at the same time.

The diagram (see link below) does not appear to be to scale and I will not make a guesstimation, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks all
Chris

I don't believe it makes much difference as long as the depth is sufficient to allow a bit of clearance for the firing pin.  The edge created by the OD of the tool and the clearance hole is used to depress the firing pin a bit and allow the lugs to engage and turn the firing pin, unscrewing it from the cocking piece.  Be sure to remove the lock screw first...  In effect a piece of tubing would be quite as effective as the tool shown..

Thanks for the info.  From the book that I read, it sounded like the only way to remove the firing pin was to actually put pressure on the tip to depress it.  I wasn't crazy about that idea, but figured that if I had to do it, then I'd best get the exact measurements.

Thankfully you clarified things for me.

I have a drawing to make the disassembly tool. I believe something similar is in Frank De Haas' book Bolt Action Rifles. If not, let me know your e-mail address, and I'll send a pdf file.
