ported 500 barrel
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:54:14 AM »
while putting together a shotgun for dove huntin in AZ i traded a factory 12 ga 18 1/2 barrel for a vr barrel.....28" 12 ga vr w/accuchoke and factory porting. Do any of you guys shoot this barrel? I was wondering if the ported barrel was significantly louder than an unported barrel?

Ported barrels have a louder and more obnoxious report, as a general rule. Mossberg's take on ported barrels is no exception.

Listening to a ported shotgun, while on our skeet field, you hear a crack and roar all at the same time. Most are not comfortable to be standing directly to one side when it fires. Some say the porting helps with recoil but I have my doubts on a shotgun.

definately louder but you wont notice that much with light field loads. 3inch, buckshot and slug loads will definately be louder but i can definately tell a differnce in recoil using a ported barrel with them.
