3:30AM
« on: June 15, 2010, 04:33:23 AM »
When the sun came up this morning it hit the mirror on the dresser and reflected right in my face.  Flash, I'm awake, can't get back to sleep.  June and July are killers up here.  The sun goes down a little after midnight, and is back up at 3:30.  It does not get dark, just twilight for a few hours.  Finally got up at 4:30, went out on the front porch and sat down in the swing.

Been there about 10 minutes when I realized there was a Moose lying in amoungst the birches about 20 yards from the porch.  She just laid there dozing.  Another 5 minutes and the Rabbits came out.  Actually SnowShoe Hares.  Their feet are still white, the rest of their bodies are brown.  A short while later and I saw grouse moving in the wild roses.  Mallards kept flying over the porch, circling to land on Norman's pond down the street.  Robins everywhere.  Heard Geese and Cranes in the gravel pit behind my property.  That is why the mallards are staying at Norm's pond.

It's so quite and peaceful this time of the morning.  Just sitting here typing on my lap top as I swing.  There must be a hundred little birds flying to and from my bird feeder at the edge of the porch.  More rabbits are out now, eight that I can count.  I think there is more out in the Birches, but can't see there well.  Two just ran under the porch, and have not came back out.

Well it's 5:20 now and the Moose got up.  She is brousing around the willows amoungst the Birches.  They like those fresh willow shoots.  She is a young cow, last years calf.  Mama probably kicked her out so she can attend to her new baby this spring.  I've seen this one for the last week hanging around the area.  Norm says he has a Cow and New Calf hanging around the pond.  Glad there is no Wolves or Bears in the area right now.  I like the quite peacefulness.

Well the paperboy just came up the street, so I quess I'll walk out and get the paper and see what is going on in the world, or maybe I'll just throw it on the porch and wait till later.

I've always wanted to visit up there! I'd like to see what everyone says is only hours of twlight!

It's kinda like seeing a toilet flush counterclockwise south of the equator.

I love living in the woods! It's so peaceful! Enjoy!

Nice picture you painted for us Rog!  Lovely actually. If it wasn't raining and blowing I'd be able to hear cranes, have a few ducks flying up and down the creek. But moose and rabbits are sparse here.  Given I rarely go to bed before midnight, I'm usually hard asleep in the sack at 3, 4, 5. On those days I do get up that early it is very nice.

Thanks for sharing!

I usually go to bed around 10 or 11.  I usually get up about 7.  Got to remember to close the curtains.

Dad was up there in 1938 working on a gold dredge. He always spoke fondly of the experience. We've still got his movies with the
Northern Lights. He always wanted to return; but, never got the chance.

Sounds like a tough life.   ;) I'm usually up at or awake at 4 AM. Old habits just hang on. I enjoy drinking coffee on the patio and watching the world wake up. I'm a way too far south for moose and a little too far east and south for wolves and bears. Have plenty of birds and rabbits though and the coyotes have been thinned out a lot. Enjoy, winter's coming.  ;D

I work second shift so it is very rare when I am up that early. Thats why I always take the first week to ten days off for spring turkey season. I love listening and watching the world wake up. Makes my turkey season even more special. Thanks for sharring that, It reminded me of the time I was hunkered down against a tree in full camo and had a blue bird land on my knee.

My house faces west, and I sit in the evening and watch the sun getting lower.  But there is never anything but the sun and sky at that time.  The sky is often beautiful, but nothing like in the mornings.  When the sun first comes up, that is when everything is waking up and getting the day started.  Morning seem to be more peaceful.  Preditors seem to always be out in the evening.

Interesting how the Preds and critters can internalize ther what we describe as "sunrise" and "sunset" when the sun hardly dips below the horizon and "eternal twilight" prevails in that period we usually call night.  I have been above the Arctic Circle, above the Prudhoe Bay oil fields, not quite as far north as the Pole, but far enough, and have seen where the sun only circles the horizon all day and night.  What an experience.   I have also seen the night there when you thought the sun would never rise and only the play of the Northern Lights and the blowing snow and cold were there to remind you that we humans are so small in God's Universe.  What a place are the Pole of this Earth.  I have been near both.
