Hey Spanky...
« on: June 16, 2010, 08:02:21 PM »

How's this for a triple threat on my new custom rig..

A 26" 30-06 Springfield

A 22" 444 Marlin

A 22" 500 Smith & Wesson

I think that should cover from 125 grains up to 700 grainers quite well...don't you ;) ;) ;) :D ;D

The 30-06 will do anything that needs doin' all by itself. The 444 would be nice to have. I wouldn't waste time on the 500.
Have you had a chance to get back to the range with the new one yet?

Nope..I won't be going till I get to go to another range to shoot at..The one I went to isn't even fun to shoot at the way it is set up and the amount of people shooting there since they have the only other public range done for remodeling and getting all new staff trained for working there. I also will be doing some things on the varmint forearm on it,to get it ready for all 3 of these barrels to work on it,I have some ideas on how to do this, but waiting on a manufacturer to get back to me on what I am wanting to do. If this one don't,then I will go with plan my plan "B" I have, both will be a-lot easier to do than even RTV bedding them.I also need to get some good bullets loaded, and also lap the bore and chamber some.

I like these 3 calibers..Don't know what you have against the 500 S&W though, but I certainly like the o6' and the 444..but never had a Handi in 500 S&W. I have been reasing a-lot about them off and on for a while and it seems many consider it to be a fun round to shoot espcially with some of the real light-mild loadings avilable, which is what I plan on doing to start once I get set up for it.Course I wouldn't mind trying some of those big A** Ranger Ricks 700 grain bullets, those might be kinda fun too. They both will get sent out to Wayne evintually to be Cerrkoted like the o6' is..and both will be set up with some type of iron sights on them cause I want to use them for what they are..

I don't really have anything against the 500... I had one for a while. I didn't reload for it so feeding it was pretty expensive. I just think the 45-70 is better all around than the 500. The 444 is one that I'd like to have myself... I think it's a very good yet underrated cartridge... mostly because the 45-70 is so popular and steals alot of the 444's thunder. You definitely have all the bases covered with your 3 choices. You can even shoot the 55gr. accelerators in the 06. From 55gr. to 700gr. that's quite a trifecta. ;D Will the handi grip stock work with both scope and irons? The only one I've handled was a 223 with no sights.

Seem to me it should handle both well enough depending on what type of sight I use,but I won't know till I actually try it. The bummer is the 444 deal fell through this morning..so I have to wait and resell my 243 and try to sell all of my new reloading dies and components. >:( I still am going to get the 500..and will try for another 444..I like that name...Trifecta...ya..like that a-lot.

Hope ya get it pulled together Mac.  I like my 444's a lot.  I could sell the 45-70's and just keep my 444's and be really happy.  I think ya got a great plan with yer custom set up.  Interested in what your "bedding" plan is.  DP
