More crazy prices in the classifieds

Just read a WTS post in the H&R classifieds... the seller wants more for a barrel and frame than it costs for a whole new Handi. Just like I posted a week or so ago... it's cheaper and easier to just go buy a new one. :-\
When are guys gonna get real with these prices? Handi's ain't made of gold. ::)

Prolly would be more appropriate in the NEF section perhaps on the Centerfire rifle forum there.

But you are right I see folks listing things all the time at prices that make me scratch my head and wonder what the heck they are thinking as the stuff isn't worth anywhere near that.

What surprises me even more tho is that all too often someone grabs them up at what I consider outrageous prices with no hesitation. It seems to me that these days folks have more money than brains. Or maybe I'm just stuck in the past and can't bring myself to accept modern prices.

Don't buy anything on line, but, I have seen this at auctions. One big gun estate auction I went to, a Ruger 10/22 with a Weaver scope on it, went to over $200. At the time, this was a few years back, a new 10/22 was advertised around hunting season for $99 at the big box store's.And the Weaver scope around $29. My old next door neighbor, who use to farm quite a bit of land, said he seen the same thing at farm auctions. Used equipment would sell for the same or more than new stuff. Wonder why I never seem to find those people when I want to sell something? ;D gypsyman

I've seen some nice handgun prices by individual sellers on other forums, who are just trying to consolidate calibers, and police trade ins are going for a real decent price. But yeah, many used rifles, including handi-rifles have some outrageous prices on them, in spite of Stevens and Marlins new offerings of economy but well made and accurate rifles these days. I don't see folks grabbing up too many of the used rifles. But I guess the cult following of handi's might  bring in money for unusual calibers, componants. hey, there's more than just a few people with more money than brains. Many just don't have common sense.  I did buy a new Marlin camo XL7 from a guy, who had some sudden bills last month. He didn't mind selling it from his big ol gun safe though.

The price of anything is usualy on par with what someone else is willing to pay for it.
If it is to high it will sit until either the price comes down or someone feels they just have to have it.
Many places across the country Handi prices have taken an increase so people are willing to give more for a used one.
The same goes for any of the odd items such as calibers or odd barrel lenghts that are not offered anymore.
Try and find an H&R 7.62x39 and if you do at what price.
Also the barrels and wood have gone up at the factory so of course any of these parts, used, will bring more with out the wait period.
Most anything else has increased also.
You can't buy a truck for the price you could a few years ago either.

I see H&R-NEFs for sale all the time used at retail prices. Then again next to them same or simular at half and a cheap scope thrown in. I think people have found as with the T/Cs they can get more for the parts than the whole gun.

With handguns often the seller thinks that not having to do paper work is worth something . I expect that as the police start a trace the sales path of most any legal gun would come to light pretty fast. Others are hoping the buyer is not educated as to value. And then there are those that think use does not cut value.

Online sale, there is a paperwork trail.  As to police trace, seems like effort is half hearted. LOL, I'm still waiting for a call from the police, to hear they recovered my LH Winchester 70 XTR, that was stolen from my apt in 1987.

A few years back, I bought a used rifle at a pawn shop, for my son, who said he might go hunting with me that year. When he changed his mind about hunting, I traded in the rifle at another gun shop for something I wanted. 2 days later I get a call from the police, saying a fellow recognised his rifle that was stolen earlier that year from him. It was the rifle I had traded in. I showed them the receipt from the other store, where I had gotten the rifle. That store owner stated he had checked the data base of stolen guns before accepting the rifle from another seller. Police did get the bad guy, but only after following the papertrail, AFTER the orignal owner saw his rifle at the gun shop, heehee.

As to Handi's, they can be modified with barrels, stocks, and some changed to shotshells. I can see how a thief might want to sell parts separately. But I don't think it would happen much at established Forums with posters having high postings and familiarity.
 My understanding is that many folks leave a Handi-rifle with one certain barrel on it, once it has proven itself a super shooter. When I saw what people were willing to pay for Handi parts, I was tempted to part out my .270. But it shoots too darn good. I decided to keep my only Handi-rifle, when it didn't sell as a whole rifle. I only buy FTF from people I know. The new Marlin I bought, came from a retired AF officer.

Handi stuff sells used for the same or slightly less than what it sells for from the factory. If you can even get it. Within a reasonable time frame. Which is unusual compared to Brownings or TC that often sell for half of what they sell for new. But you can get TC stuff from a hundred sources.

You know, I've done lots of online trading, LOTS.  I've not had any problems.

I have, however, seen people who try to over price things, hoping I guess some fool will pay the price.  Sometimes they do.

Free markets work, and I anticipate that people who frequently do such nonsense will lose business.
