In my #3 factory loads are a gentle push, but as you move to the wild side things do change in a hurry, now I'm halfway between mild and wild still tough to take zeroing in from a bench, but alot of fun offhand, compared to this animal  with 500 Gr bullets, the 30-30 is about recoil-less..............steg

Steg,

I like the #3, but if I was shooting it in any thing even close to the 45/70, the #3 wood would quickly be replaced with #1 wood.

I know many folk like the rifles with lots of drop in the butt stock, RUGER #3,  Marlins, Winchester 94s, Handi rifles etc.

But I find them very abusive.

I had, and wish I still had, a Marlin in .44 mag., but found it really beat me up until I put a thick recoil pad in place.

It was not an issue of recoil at the shoulder, but the fact that my face, nose, thumb took the brunt of the beating.

I was shooting my normal RUGER RedHawk load of a 310gr. cast LBT ahead of 19gr. of AA#9, a load that get just a tad over 1300fps from the 5.5" RH.

The stock was too short, and the drop at the heal too much and the addition of an inch thick pad solved the painfull part of the situation.

I have seen #3s with #1 wood and they are sweet.  There needs to be just a bit of work on the lever to fit the curve of the #1s grip, but they look great and of course are still #1 - bank vault strong.

Keep em coming!

I love #3s, I hate to see them turned into #1s.  They are getting harder to find.

I hear what your saying Swampman, but I have never liked a rifle that beats me.

Therefore, if I have one with that poor habit, something has to give or it goes.

Have never had a #3, but and this is just IMHO, with #1 wood, it would look great in my rack.

Keep em coming!

I have a couple guide guns and have never shot any bullet but the rem 405.  I had a sweet load using H4895.

I find that when you start messing around with H322 the pain will begin   ;D

Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

I have a Ruger No. 1.   13 grains of Trail Boss and the 405 Remington is very mild - almost like not shooting a 45-70. 36.5 grains of IMR 4198 and the 300 Remington gets me 1520 fps and is a reasonably powerful load with not too much recoil - very pleasant to shoot. When I push the 300 grain Sierra up to 2100 fps recoil gets more serious. According to Sierra this load is generating about 3000 ft. lbs of energy which is about what you have with a stout 30-06 load. I have never fired any factory 45-70 ammo so cannot compare.

I'm looking for another stock to put a recoil pad on, that way it can still be restored to being original, not necessarily in case I want to sell it, that won't happen, and my Son also enjoys the rifle, so it will stay in the family long after I'm gone............steg
